Pt III, Line 31		Active for Justice
		The February-March edition of Active for Justice featured a cover story on fracking and local control, plus a centerspread
		on elements for Middle East Peace. The April-May edition carried an overview of county commissioner elections and a
		centerspread on local economy. In the June-July edition, we covered a campaign to reform mortgage procedures in
		Colorado (Initiative 84) and state water issues. The August-September edition published Mary Jones' piece on her
		ICAHD experience and an "After the Fire" centerspread on food, water and energy security. The October-November
		edition featured a cover story on the Downtown Public Market effort and a centerspread on war-tax resistance in
		conjunction with the national gathering of the National War Tax Resistance Coordinating Committee. The December
		2012-January 2013 edition came out in early January in order to lead with a story about the No-Solicitation Zone battle.
		All People's Breakfast
		About 250 people attended the All People's Breakfast at Colorado College on Jan. 16. Rosemary Harris Lytle (Colorado
		Springs Branch NAACP) did a great job addressing the theme of "Ending Mass Incarceration in America." Little has
		changed for communities of color in terms of the justice system since Dr. King challenged Jim Crow some 50 years ago.
		All three men on Colorado's Death Row are African Americans. Freedom songs were delivered by the Gospel Music
		Workshop of America. We collected 60 surveys about action steps people in attendance are willing to take and proceeds
		of more than $700 will benefit the Peace Scholarship Fund.
		Middle East Peace Project
		The Middle East Peace Project has been a stellar example of a self-directed group of J&P members with a specific vision
		for change. They held several boycott actions of Sabra and Tribe hummus at Safeway stores. They raised about $4,200 to
		send our Y-Core peace envoy Mary Jones to Palestine in July to work on the The Israeli Committee Against House
		Demolitions (ICAHD) project. They also co-sponsored a forum on Middle East peace with the Green Party featuring Dr.
		Rob Prince (Jewish) and Dr. Ibrahim Kazarooni (Muslim) and showed the film "Miral" at Colorado College in April.
		Nonviolence Classes
		Steve Handen taught "Foundations of Nonviolence" at Colorado College and brought Kathy Kelly to town as a guest
		instructor. She spoke on Feb. 11 to about 50 people at the Penrose Library. Kathy discussed how Americans need to be
		educated about what's really happening overseas.

		Peace Camp
		Peace Camp was held in July at Beth-El Mennonite Church. Melissa Allen, Heidi Cooper and Lori Sly delivered one of
		the best camps ever! We had 42 kids sign up and one of the highlights was joining the MEPP for a boycott action at a
		Safeway near the camp site. Financially, Peace Camp was in the black for the first time in recent memory.
		Peace Vigils & Bannering
		Gun violence seemed to explode in 2012, beginning with the tragic Aurora theater shooting on July 20. Dennis organized
		a candlelight vigil, which attracted about 60 people as well as two TV stations and the Gazette. The weekend after the
		shooting, we created a "Peace Space" at PrideFest inside the canopy and invited people to sit inside and chat about the
		shooting, peace, whatever.
		Homeless Advocacy
		This is the project we brought to the foreground when the city finally passed its No-Solicitation Zone ordinance. I
		opposed the ordinance before city council prior to the 8-1 vote to pass it. Loring (representing the local ACLU) made it
		clear that passing the ordinance would trigger a legal challenge. Mayor Steve Bach's attitude was "bring it on" and
		Councilman Tim Leigh went so far as to call all downtown panhandlers "criminals." With the J&P as a lead plantiff, the
		ACLU filed suit in Denver to challenge the ordinance and request a court injunction against enforcing it until the case is
		heard. I took the stand in December in a Denver court to explain how the blanket ban on all solicitation would violate the
		rights of nonprofits to raise money on street corners. Besides this practical concern, I tried to make it clear to council and
		those in court that many panhandlers downtown are in need of mental health treatment and deserve our respect, not scorn.
		I handed out our article about the Rich Farm in hopes of getting the project on people's radar.
		In addition to the Rich Farm project, we have been hammering out the details with Connie Allen of a sliding-scale
		counseling practice to be housed at our office. Called Hope Clinic, the service will provide court-ordered classes and
		therapy sessions to low-income and hard-to-serve people. One of our goals is to make sure people on parole or probation
		don't go to jail for failure to pay or attend classes.
		Finally, the Bijou Community organized another "Longest Night of the Year" vigil for our homeless friends who have
		died in the past year. Esther Kisamore did most of the work and expressed interest in getting more of a team together next
		year. I think this should be on our radar as an event we look after in the future.
		Rich Farm
		A master's student in psychology named Nova Munselle did her practicum research early this year, trying to find gaps in
		mental health services to the indigent and possible solutions. After consulting area experts, we ended up visiting Harvest
		Farm, a program of the Denver Rescue Mission where men in drug and alcohol recovery live and work on a farm in
		Wellington (between Fort Collins and Cheyenne, Wyo.) We are advocating the establishment of a similar "Rich Farm"
		near Colorado Springs, where mentally ill homeless people might be referred for shelter and treatment.
		Immigrant Network
		Corey Almond of Catholic Charities and Tarrie Burnett of Lutheran World Services met with us about the fledgling
		Immigrant Network. Corey wants to eventually host a conference on immigration. Our first step was joining with the
		Colorado Springs Diversity Forum and Pikes Peak Library District in organizing an Immigration Symposium in August.
		The J&P has also signed on to the Colorado Compact on Immigration, a set of guiding principles that could bring various
		groups around the state to the reform table.
		Urban Experience
		We conducted Urban Experiences for Holmes Middle School, Trailblazer Elementary and UCCS students. I also
		organized classes for D11 teachers, volunteers with Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) and a group seeking a
		Lenten reflection experience. All told, 170 people went on nine UEs, an improvement over last year.
		Fracking
		We continued to fight fracking by running articles in Active for Justice, co-sponsoring public forums and urging members
		to attend protests and speak out at local governmental meetings.
