LIKE ALL BANGOR Y PROGRAMS, OUR CHILDCARE PROGRAMS REINFORCE THE CHARACTER VALUES OF HONESTY, CARING, RESPECT AND RESPONSIBILITY. WE PARTNER WITH OTHER COMMUNITY AND GOVERNMENT AGENCIES, INCLUDING THE UNITED WAY AND DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES TO HELP ENSURE THAT OUR CHILDCARE PROGRAMS ARE ACCESSIBLE TO ALL AND FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE IS AVAILABLE FOR THOSE IN NEED. IN 2011, WE SERVED 431 CHILDREN IN OUR BANGOR Y CHILDCARE PROGRAMS AND PROVIDED 32,900 IN FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE. FOR MORE THAN 100 YEARS, THE BANGOR Y HAS BEEN PROVIDING SAFE, QUALITY CAMPING EXPERIENCES THAT ENCOURAGE SELF-DISCOVERY, CHARACTER-BUILDING, AND FUN FOR YOUNG PEOPLE IN THE GREATER BANGOR COMMUNITY AND BEYOND. THE BANGOR Y OFFERS A VARIETY OF SUMMER DAY CAMPS FOR CHILDREN AGES 5-12, WITH A LEADERS-IN-TRAINING PROGRAM FOR YOUTH IN THE 8TH-10TH GRADES. THE BANGOR Y 200-ACRE RESIDENT CAMP, CAMP JORDAN, IS THE OLDEST YMCA CAMP IN MAINE AND WELCOMES CHILDREN AGES 8-14 EACH SUMMER. CAMP JORDAN ALSO HOSTS A POPULAR LEADERS SCHOOL PROGRAM FOR 2 WEEKS EACH SUMMER WHERE TEENS ARE ENCOURAGED TO BUILD SKILLS, SELF-ESTEEM AND SHAPE FUTURE GOALS THROUGH ADVENTURE CHALLENGE AND PERSONAL REFLECTION. BANGOR Y CAMPERS ENJOY A MIX OF TRADITIONAL AND NON-TRADITIONAL PROGRAMMING INCLUDING CANOEING, SWIMMING, SAILING, ARCHERY, FISHING, CRAFTS, THEATER, ROPES COURSE, NATURE EDUCATION, HIKING, SPORTS, AND MOVIE-MAKING. ALL BANGOR Y SUMMER CAMPS BENEFIT FROM WELL-TRAINED AND EXPERIENCED STAFF, MANY OF WHOM ALSO WORK IN OUR BANGOR Y CHILDCARE PROGRAMS AND RETURN AS SUMMER CAMP STAFF EACH YEAR. TO MAKE BANGOR Y SUMMER CAMPS ACCESSIBLE TO ALL, WE OFFER ACCESS-Y SUMMER CAMP SCHOLARSHIPS AND A SEND-A-KID-TO-CAMP PROGRAM TO HELP THOSE IN NEED OF FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE. IN 2011, BANGOR Y SUMMER CAMPS SERVED 1,252 CHILDREN AND PROVIDED 133,640 IN FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE.

MENTORING OPPORTUNITIES, EMPHASIS ON BUILDING CONFIDENCE AND SELF-ESTEEM; IDENTIFICATION OF AND STRATEGIES TO ADDRESS PEER TO PEER ABUSE/BULLYING; AND ACADEMIC SUPPORT AND HELP WITH SCHOOL-RELATED ISSUES. THE PROGRAMS ALSO INCLUDE A COMMUNITY SERVICE COMPONENT TO ENCOURAGE YOUTH TO DEVELOP A CONNECTION AND SENSE OF RESPONSIBILITY TO THEIR COMMUNITY. OUR GOAL IS TO INVOLVE AT-RISK YOUTH IN OUR COMMUNITY IN CHARACTER BUILDING PROGRAMS THAT WILL NOT ONLY HELP THEM TO COPE WITH DIFFICULT SITUATIONS AND MAKE BETTER LIFE CHOICES, BUT PROVIDE THEM WITH LEADERSHIP SKILLS AS WELL. THE BANGOR Y CARING CONNECTIONS PROGRAM OFFERED IN PARTNERSHIP WITH EASTERN MAINE MEDICAL CENTER PROVIDES WOMEN'S HEALTH EDUCATION AND SERVICES AND SUPPORT FOR WOMEN DIAGNOSED WITH BREAST CANCER AND THEIR FAMILIES. THE BANGOR Y CARDIAC/PULMONARY REHABILITATION PROGRAM OFFERED WITH THE SUPPORT OF VOLUNTEERS FROM ST. JOSEPH HOSPITAL PROVIDES EDUCATION, SUPPORT AND APPROPRIATE, PROGRESSIVE, SUPERVISED PHYSICAL ACTIVITY FOR THOSE SUFFERING FROM CHRONIC CARDIAC OR PULMONARY DISEASE OR WHO HAVE SUFFERED CARDIAC OR PULMONARY EVENTS. IN 2011, THE BANGOR Y TOUCHED MORE THAN 3,573 INDIVIDUALS THROUGH OUR COMMUNITY OUTREACH AND EDUCATION PROGRAMS.
