Explanation
Organization's Mission
990, Page 2, Part III, line 1
The National Mentoring Partnership's (MENTOR) mission is to fuel the quality and quantity of mentoring relationships for America's young people and to close the mentoring gap. We drive the investment of time and money into high impact mentoring programs through advocacy, influence strategy and public awareness. We advance quality mentoring through the development and delivery of standards, cutting-edge research, state-of-the-art tools, and a national network of local capacity and movement builders.
State Partnership Support
(continued from 990, page 2, Part III, line 4a)
In 2012 MENTOR supported 26 established Mentoring Partnerships through supported knowledge sharing, sustainability and continuing improvement. In addition, MENTOR assisted in the development of two new Mentoring Partnerships in Illinois and Newark, NJ and began supporting a potential partnership in Colorado.
Promotions, Public Education & Policy
(continued from 990, page 2, Part III, line 4b)
In addition, MENTOR continued to work with Congress and coalition leaders to guide the Child Protection Improvement Act and provided resources on mentoring and how to become a mentor during the Born Brave Bus Tour movement coordinated by the Born This Way Foundation. This Way Foundation.
Mentoring Research Best Practices
990, page 2, PART III, LINE 4D
Mentoring Research Best Practices: Through a grant from the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, MENTOR examined best practices for referring youth to mentoring programs from six juvenile justice settings. The focus of the project was on the "referral stage" of mentoring to improve the design and delivery of mentoring services to appropriate high-risk youth. Trainings were delivered in local communities through the Mentoring Partnership Network and materials produced from this project are available as resources on the MENTOR website.
990 Review
PART VI, SECTION B, LINE 11b
The draft IRS Form 990 is first reviewed by the Audit Committee. Accounting department staff and the auditors participate in that review. The Audit Committee finishes the meeting in executive session with the auditors. The Audit Committee recommends the filing of the Form 990, with changes as needed. The Executive Committee reviews the Audit Committee's report at its next meeting, and approves the filing of the Form 990. The full Board reviews the Audit Committee's report at its next meeting, and confirms the Executive Committee's acceptance of the Form 990.
Conflict of Interest
PART VI, SECTION B, LINE 12c
First, officers, directors, trustees, and key employees are aware of the Conflict of Interest Policy. In addition, accounting department staff prepare an annual list of consultants for Audit Committee review - a list which is subsequently reviewed by the Executive Committee and the full Board. Any conflicts of interest would be uncovered in this series of review.
Officer Compensation
PART VI, SECTION B, LINE 15B
The CEO salary was recommended by an independent executive recruitment firm. The Executive Committee reviewed the recommendation, and negotiated the salary with the CEO. All other staff salaries are reviewed at length by the Executive Committee as part of the annual budget process. Staff tenure, experience, skill set, and comparisons with similar organizations are taken into account.
