Strengthening Our Communities - United Way of King of King County is committed to changing our community for the better in fundamental lasting ways by enhancing the ability of individuals to care for one another. We are able to play this role because of the trust the community has in United Way of King County's expertise, efficiency and results. We deeply understand our community, its people and its challenges. With a solid grasp of the issues, United Way of King County is able to shape an effective response. We're acquainted with the network of service providers in our region and we know who has the capacity and track record to bring about change. In addition to expertise, United Way of King County stands for efficiency. We put 98 cents of every donated dollar into community programs. Achievements: 32,000 volunteers connected to service projects. United Way of King County is a central hub of volunteering in our region. 14,400 free tax returns filed bringing $20.7 million in federal refunds back into our community. 11,400 families were linked to quality child care. 365,457 people helped by United Way of King County programs and services. 1,183,512 visits to food programs helped people meet their basic food needs. 50,000 summer meals delivered to low-income children meals. 4,743 people connected to public benefits through the Bridge to Basics program.
4b (Code:   ) (Expenses $ 6,334,261 including grants of $ 6,019,255 ) (Revenue $ 0 )
Early Learning - United Way is committed to a community that thrives both now and far into the future and when it comes to our community's children, failure is not an option. Hence, a key priority for us is to ensure that every child in our region, regardless of income, neighborhood or background, has the chance to make the strongest possible start. Since a growing body of research indicates that the ages of birth to age 6 are pivotal to development socially, emotionally and cognitively, much of our emphasis is on programs that make these early years as rich and nurturing as possible. Achievements: 8,286 parents learned new skills from early learning experts to help their children acquire the social, intellectual and emotional skills for healthy development. 4,645 young children met key developmental milestones to prepare them to enter school ready to learn. 500 families enrolled in our Parent-Child Home Program, a two year home visiting program teaching parents how to be children's first and best teachers.
4c (Code:   ) (Expenses $ 12,029,269 including grants of $ 11,435,454 ) (Revenue $ 0 )
Ending Homelessness - United Way of King County is able to achieve meaningful results in the community because we pinpoint the areas where we can make the biggest impact. Instead of merely addressing the symptoms of a problem, we go deeper to find the root causes and determine how we can create solutions. Our priority to end homelessness in King County is a good illustration of this. We know that to really end homelessness we must prevent people from becoming homeless, and move people into housing that will provide the structure and support they need to become stable and self-sufficient. Permanent supportive housing is a proven strategy that has saved lives, and saves our community tens of thousands of dollars in avoided costs for visits to the emergency room, the sobering center and the jail system. Additionally, United Way funding is leveraging substantial additional dollars from the City of Seattle, King County, the Seattle Housing Authority and the King County Housing Authority to truly end homelessness. Achievements: 44,827 people experiencing homelessness found safety from the dangers of the street through emergency shelter and other services. 2,127 people received tenant education to understand their rights and help them stay in their homes. 166 new units of supportive housing for homeless people were constructed and opened.
(Code:   ) (Expenses $ 2,564,784 including grants of $ 222,248 ) (Revenue $ 68,771 )
Schedule O- Other program services: Overhead of managing and administering our program services. These are accounted for as program services expenses. Thanks to our efficiency and operating endowment begun by the Gates Foundation, on average 98 cents of every donated dollar goes direct to community needs.

Identifier Return Reference Explanation
SchI_P01_S00_L02 Schedule I, Part I, Line 2 United Way of King County (UWKC) respects the desire of donors to choose to designate their contributions. Several options are available to accommodate donor's choices. A donor may give a contribution to UWKC to support UWKC programs and priorities. A donor may designate his/her contribution to a United Way partner agency. This contribution will be to the agency in additional to allocations from UWKC. Those UWKC dollars granted directly to partner agencies are monitored through routine reporting of grantees, audit information and review, and periodic site visits. A donor may designate his/her contribution to any United Way in the United States. A donor may also designate his/her contribution to any certified 501c3 organization in the USA. For most agencies, we verify their 501c3 status using data files that we receive from the IRS. The IRS updates these files about once a month and makes them available for retrieval from the IRS website. We incorporate this data into a search database. For organizations not found in the IRS data files, we require a copy of the 501c3 Determination Letter issued to the organization by the IRS or, in a few instances, we verify the 501c3 eligibility with an IRS agent over the phone. Several times a year, we review the 501c3 organizations we have set up in our database against new data we receive from the IRS to ensure that we only pay out to those agencies that are currently eligible. UWKC reserves the right to collect a fee for processing donor-designated dollars. UWKC also may decline to accept certain donor -designated dollars. UWKC may encounter circumstances where it must hold or freeze donor-designated dollars due to legal compulsion, threat of compulsion, or other reasons.
