	In FY 2011-12, the WSVMA provided valuable service to its members through a variety of programs, activities and accomplishments. The WSVMA Executive Board met four times this year at locations across the state. Elections were held in July for new representatives in four regions as well as for the first vice president. The WSVMA advocated for members and animal welfare in a variety of ways:* Passed legislation and worked with the Department of Health to make the Prescription Monitoring Program less onerous for veterinarians.* Met with the local Drug Enforcement Agency office regarding carrying controlled substances by mobile veterinary practices.* Worked with the Department of Labor & Industries on the impending hazardous drugs rules and their effect on veterinary practices.* Prepared language for legislation that will, if passed in the 2013 legislative session, provide immunity for veterinarians who report in good faith suspected cases of animal cruelty.WSVMA committees were very active in FY 2011-12 and accomplished a great deal. * The Recent Grad Committee planned networking events and continuing education for recent grads. * The Insurance Committee established a new provider for disability insurance for members. The Committee also identified a new supplier of group health and voluntary insurance products.* The WSVMA Economics Task Force surveyed the Washington veterinary business environment to assess their economic health during this difficult economy. The results of the survey were used to determine how to best help veterinarians navigate their way through challenging economic times.* The Animal Welfare Committee published the "Animal Cruelty Reporting - A Resource Guide for the Veterinary Professional."* A new task force was formed to address the prevalence of suicide among veterinarians, to assist with issues of professional stress and to provide education and resources to build awareness among members. * The Disaster and Emergency Management Committee updated their Disaster Planning Guide and worked to re-establish a network of volunteer veterinarians to work at the county level.New member benefits were introduced during 2011-12. WSVMA Performance Analytics are low cost, high value tools used to evaluate the economic health of a veterinary practice, including a practice diagnostic report, fee guide and client satisfaction surveys. Reputation.com is a service that assists veterinary practices in monitoring online reviews.Two new brochures were added to WSVMA resources: "The Risks of Unlicensed Equine Dentistry" and "Dogs and Pickups Don't Mix."In the fall of 2012, the WSVMA held the 101st Annual Conference in Yakima, Washington. The three-day program hosted over 400 veterinarians, veterinary technicians, veterinary students, practice managers, speakers, exhibitors and guests. Over 90 hours of education were offered in small animal, large animal and equine medicine. Courses in veterinary economics, communication, marketing and complementary and alternative medicine rounded out the program. Social events included VetFest!, a barbecue and barn dance.In spring 2012, the WSVMA hosted a continuing education program on urinary tract disease. A second CE program was held for recent grads on the topic of wound management. The WSVMA is active with veterinary students at WSU's College of Veterinary Medicine. In addition to attending milestone events like the White Coat ceremony and the Transition Ceremony, representatives also spoke to first-year students as well as third-year students through lectures and networking events. The resource guide "Financial Planning for Veterinary Students" was published.WSVMA's bi-monthly magazine, Insight, was published and sent to members. Articles contained in six issues covered the following topics: reporting suspected cases of animal cruelty, practice profitability, issues related to practice sector, preventive veterinary care, how associates contribute to practice success, buying and selling practices, economic health of WA veterinary practices, protecting pet and pet owner privacy, thriving in the new economy, potentially impairing illness, tail docking, veterinary nutrition, WSU and the WSVMA Annual Conference. Other components of the magazine consist of columns by the President, Communications Director and Executive VP as well as a bank of relief veterinarians, events and classifieds. A monthly electronic newsletter, Sparks, was sent to members highlighting up to the minute news items, member programs, events, and other important news items. The WSVMA routinely updated its website, www.wsvma.org, to reflect current news, information, events and member directories. The Find-a-Vet search is accessible from the home page and is a resource for pet owners to find a veterinarian in their local area. There are several resource sections including animal welfare, wellness, veterinary law, client and practice information, disaster planning and resources for pet owners. Veterinarians can join or renew their membership online as well as register for WSVMA events.
