Primary Purpose:
While Arts programming continues to be slashed from educational budgets,
Milwaukee's underserved teens are also not being adequately
prepared to successfully transition out of high school
and into the workforce, at a time when Milwaukee businesses face
tightening labor markets and milwaukee communities are affected more than
ever by the implications of unemployment. At ArtWorks,
we put the arts to work to develop Milwaukee's future
workforce. Youth with and without disabilities who
face significant barriers to employment are hired as Intern Artists
and trained in highly transferable job skills to create
visual, literary, media and performing works of art under the
guidance of contracted professional, local lead artists.
Artworks for Milwaukee,Inc. is a 501(c)3 nonprofit
that provides paid,arts-based internships to
Milwaukee-area high school students who face barriers to employment.
Interns learn traditional visual arts techniques as well as highly transferable skills that help them find jobs
in any industry. The program exposes interns to realistic
workplace expectations,processes, and procedures.
Mission:
To prepare underserved teens to enter Milwaukee's
workforce by utilizing the arts as a method to teach
employable skills.We believe:
Strong emplyment supports strong communities

Underserved teens who develop employability skills
contribute to strong communities
Utilizing paid arts internships is an effective way
to engage enderserved teens and train highly
transferable job skills.
Description of Services Provided:
We use the arts to engage youth in creative ways that
might otherwise be difficult to reach. Our interns
earn wages for performing meaningful work under the
guidance of a lead artist. The lead artist is hired
on a contractural basis to guide them in the creation
of visual, literary or multimedia artwork. Our interns
do not need prior training to participate in our
programs.
We offer eight-week programs three times per year:
Spring(March-April),Summer(July-August) and Fall
(October-November). Each program hires a total of eight interns and they work ten hours
per week in the Spring and Fall programs-twenty hours per week in the
Summer-thereby allowing them enough time to complete
school work.
Number of Persons Benefitted:
On an annual basis, Artworks:
Hired 41 youth interns
Interviews a minimum of 150 candidates
Received approximately 500 applications from youth
who wish to be considered.
We have introduced changes to our current intership
programs with the introduction of a lead artist assistant
Jaleel King and a Program Coordinator, Katie Van Velzer
Katie was also a lead artist for the Summer and Fall Programs
We introduced a new logo that better reflects the "work" of Artworks
as well as a new tagline of "Inspring Creative Change"
This year's leadership transition has been successful;
Terry Murphy joined Artworks as the new Excutive Director
in July.
