KRISTIN BROOKS HOPE CENTER IS A NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION DEDICATED TO SUICIDE PREVENTION, AWARENESS AND EDUCATION. WE HELP PROVIDE HELP AND HOPE THROUGH CRISIS HOTLINES, ONLINE CRISIS CHAT, COLLEGE AWARENESS TRAININGS AND EVENTS AND OTHER PROGRAMS.
FIRST ACCOMPLISHMENT DESCRIPTION
FORM 990, PAGE 2, PART III, LINE 4A
VOLUNTEER BY CBS WASHINGTON, DC. IMALIVE VIRTUAL CRISIS CENTER VOLUNTEERS ALL OVER THE US AND CANADA RESPONDED TO OVER 8,000 CRISIS CHATS , HELPING THOSE WHO PREFER A CONFIDENTIAL CHAT INSTEAD OF A PHONE CALL. EVEN DURING HURRICANE SANDY AND ITS AFTERMATH, OUR VOLUNTEERS STEPPED IN TO TAKE OVER THE SHIFTS OF THOSE TEAM MEMBERS WHO STAYED WITHOUT POWER, AND KEPT THE LINES OPEN FOR THOSE IN CRISIS. IN 2012, WE HELD OUR 2ND ANNUAL IMALIVE NETWORK TRAINING CONFERENCE IN BALTIMORE, MD. IMALIVE.ORG VOLUNTEERS FROM US AND CANADA RECEIVED THEIR ONLINE COUNSELING & SUICIDE INTERVENTION SPECIALIST AWARDS, AND ATTENDED SEVERAL TRAINING WORKSHOPS. WE ALSO HELD OUR 12H ANNUAL AWARDS BANQUET AND RECOGNIZED SEVERAL KEY KBHC AND IMALIVE SUPPORTERS WHOSE ONGOING EFFORTS WERE INSTRUMENTAL TO OUR SUCCESS. ON OCTOBER 26TH 2012, FIRST LADY OF MARYLAND, THE HONORABLE KATIE O'MALLEY, AND POSTSECRET FOUNDER FRANK WARREN CUT THE CEREMONIAL RIBBON AT THE GRAND OPENING OF OUR YOUTHLINE EASTERN SHORE (YESIMALIVE) AND NATIONAL CALL CENTER WHICH USES LOCAL VOLUNTEERS TO PROVIDE CRISIS SUPPORT VIA PEER CRISIS HOTLINES AND CHAT. IN 2012, KRISTIN BROOKS HOPE CENTER WAS SELECTED BY IFRED AS ONE OF 10 NON-PROFITS AROUND THE GLOBE TO INCREASE AWARENESS OF THE NEED FOR A BRANDING OF DEPRESSION IN A MORE EFFECTIVE WAY. YES IMALIVE PARTNERED WITH SAFETY PROGRAMS OF QUEEN ANNE'S COUNTY AND LOCAL BOY SCOUT TROOP 495 TO GROW A FIELD OF 8-FOOT-TALL SUNFLOWERS - A FIELD FOR HOPE IN FRONT OF OUR YOUTHLINE EASTERN SHORE CALL CENTER. OUR COLLEGE SUICIDE PREVENTION TOUR & HIGH SCHOOL ANTI-BULLYING TOUR FEATURING THE ALIVE MENTAL HEALTH FAIR TRAVELED TO EIGHT COLLEGE CAMPUSES, THREE HIGH SCHOOLS AND TWO CONFERENCES. THOUSANDS OF STUDENTS AND TEACHERS TOOK THE QPR (QUESTION, PERSUADE, REFER) SUICIDE PREVENTION COURSE FOR FREE. THE DAY-LONG FAIRS HELPED STUDENTS START THE CONVERSATION ABOUT DEPRESSION, SUICIDAL IDEATION AND MENTAL ILLNESS, AS WELL AS CONNECT WITH LOCAL COLLEGE AND SCHOOL COUNSELORS. LOCALLY, KBHC BROUGHT TOGETHER COMMUNITY LEADERS, FROM QUEEN ANNE'S COUNTY SHERIFF TO STATE'S ATTORNEY AND COUNTY COMMISSIONERS , TO FORM THE QUEEN ANNE'S COUNTY SUICIDE PREVENTION COMMITTEE AIMED AT REDUCING THE RATE OF SUICIDE IN QUEEN ANNE'S COUNTY BY 50% IN 5 YEARS. IN MAY OF 2012, WE FORMED A PARTNERSHIP WITH THE QUEEN ANNE'S COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS . TOGETHER WE TRAINED ALL 150 PUBLIC SCHOOL BUS DRIVERS OF QUEEN ANNE'S COUNTY TO RECOGNIZE 4 DIFFERENT TYPES OF BULLYING AND TO WORK WITH THE SCHOOL ADMINISTRATION TO STOP BULLYING IN ITS TRACKS. THE SCHOOL BUS DRIVERS WERE ALSO TRAINED TO LOOK FOR SUICIDE WARNING SIGNS IN STUDENTS THROUGH CHANGES IN THEIR BEHAVIOR, BEING WITHDRAWN, AND ABRUPT CHANGES IN THEIR APPEARANCE. WE PRESENTED AN OVERVIEW OF SUICIDE PREVENTION TECHNIQUES TO ALL QAC PUBLIC SCHOOLS PRINCIPALS AND COUNSELORS TO HELP THEM RECOGNIZE WARNING SIGNS OF A POTENTIAL SUICIDE. AT THAT MEETING THE QAC SCHOOL SUPERINTENDENT DR. CAROL WILLIAMSON MANDATED 100% OF HER LEADERSHIP TEAM TAKE THE QPR COURSE AND PASS BY OCTOBER 1 ST, 2012. THIS MADE QUEEN ANNE'S THE FIRST COUNTY IN THE US TO HAVE ALL OF ITS PUBLIC SCHOOL PRINCIPALS TRAINED AND CERTIFIED AS SUICIDE PREVENTION GATEKEEPERS IN THE US. OUR TEAM ALSO PRESENTED AT THE MARYLAND STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION ANNUAL CONFERENCE ON OUR ANTI- BULLYING EFFORTS IN QUEEN ANNE'S COUNTY.
