FORM 990, PAGE 1, LINE 1 AND PAGE 2, LINE 1   FINDING THE CURE FOR PARKINSONS TAKES AN ORGANIZATION WITH EXTRAORDINARY VISION. Actor Michael J. Fox established The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research (the "Foundation"), incorporated in Delaware in 2000, after publicly disclosing in 1998 that he had been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease seven years earlier, at age 29. In 2009, The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research in Canada ("MJFF Canada") was established as an officially registered tax-exempt charity in Canada. As this entity meets the criteria for consolidation, its financial statements are consolidated with those of the Foundation. As MJFF Canada's assets and liabilities and its operations were not significant at December 31, 2012 and 2011, they are not shown separately in the accompanying consolidated financial statements. The Foundation is exempt from federal income taxes under Section 501(c)(3) of the U.S. Internal Revenue Code, and from state and local taxes under comparable laws. MJFF Canada is exempt from similar taxes under Canadian law. Today, The Michael J. Fox Foundation is the world's largest private funder of Parkinson's research. It is dedicated to accelerating a cure for Parkinson's disease and improved therapies for those living with the condition today. The Foundation pursues its goals through an aggressively funded, highly targeted research program coupled with active global engagement of scientists, Parkinson's patients, business leaders, clinical trial participants, donors and volunteers. In addition to funding more than $344 million in research as of December 31, 2012, the Foundation has fundamentally altered the trajectory of progress toward a cure. Operating at the hub of worldwide Parkinson's research, the Foundation forges groundbreaking collaborations with industry leaders, academic scientists and government research funders; increases the flow of participants into Parkinson's disease clinical trials with its online tool, Fox Trial Finder; promotes Parkinson's awareness through high-profile advocacy, events and outreach; and coordinates the grassroots involvement of thousands of Team Fox members around the world. In addition to funding a broad portfolio of investigator-initiated and priority-driven research programs, the Foundation is working to transform the medical research enterprise and shape a system that fosters, rather than inhibits, the development of cures. MJFF partners with the Parkinson's research community, speeding financial and intellectual resources to the scientists who can help realize ideas with the greatest promise to impact patients' lives. The Foundation has ignited collaboration among academic and industry players by requiring researchers to share information in real time. To enable scientists to move toward breakthroughs faster, MJFF has stepped up to meet their need for research tools. To date, the Foundation has funded work on over 100 therapeutic targets, and is supporting 60 clinical trials. Since its founding, MJFF has proven not only that a new kind of stakeholder can accelerate drug development - but that it is what was missing all along. While much has changed in the past decade, one thing remains constant: the Foundation's commitment to Parkinson's patients. Everything MJFF does is with patients in mind, at all stages of PD, which informs investments in disease-modifying therapies, better symptomatic treatments and new approaches to the symptoms entirely unaddressed by today's generation of drugs.
