ORGANIZATION'S MISSION
FORM 990 - ORGANIZATION'S MISSION
ARTRAIN DELIVERS DISCOVERY AND - THROUGH THE POWER OF ARTS AND CULTURE - TRANSFORMS LIVES, ORGANIZATIONS AND COMMUNITIES. ARTRAIN SERVES DIVERSE AUDIENCES IN US CITIES, TOWNS AND VILLAGES NOT USUALLY REACHED BY TRADITIONAL ARTS AND CULTURAL PROGRAMS.
FIRST ACCOMPLISHMENT DESCRIPTION
FORM 990, PAGE 2, PART III, LINE 4A
ARTRAIN'S 2012 PROGRAM SERVICE ACCOMPLISHMENTS: PATHS TO PEACE: A WAR OF 1812 ARTS LEGACY PROJECT. - IN COLLABORATION WITH THE NATIONAL PARKS SERVICE, ARTRAIN PRODUCED ITS FIRST INTERNATIONAL PROJECT. PATHS TO PEACE IS AN ART EDUCATION AND HISTORY PROGRAM TARGETING MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS FROM THE UNITED STATES AND CANADA THAT COINCIDES WITH THE BICENTENNIAL OF THE WAR OF 1812 - YEARS 2012 THROUGH 2015. THROUGH IT, STUDENTS WORK WITH RESIDENT ARTISTS TO CREATE THEIR OWN ARTWORKS IN RESPONSE TO WHAT THEY'VE LEARNED ABOUT HISTORY, INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS, AND PEACE MOVEMENTS. AS ONE STUDENT REMARKED: "WE HAD A GREAT EXPERIENCE. MY TEACHERS, OUR ARTISTS, ARTRAIN, PARK RANGERS AND EVERYONE YOU MADE IT FUN TO LEARN ABOUT THE WAR OF 1812." CRITICCAR DETROIT - JOURNALIST JENNIFER CONLIN (NEW YORK TIMES, ROLLING STONE, WORKING WOMEN, ETC.) SELECTED ARTRAIN TO PRODUCE HER EXCITING NEW PROJECT: CRITICCAR DETROIT, FOR WHICH SHE WAS RECENTLY AWARDED A KNIGHT FOUNDATION AND NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE ARTS GRANT FOR INNOVATORS WILLING TO DESIGN NEW MODELS FOR ART JOURNALISM IN THE DIGITAL AGE. CONLIN RESPONDED TO THE KNIGHT/NEA CHALLENGE BECAUSE "SPACE AND THOUGHT DEDICATED TO ARTS CRITICISM IS SHRINKING IN ALL TRADITIONAL NEWS PUBLICATIONS. THESE NEWS SOURCES NO LONGER PROVIDE SUFFICIENT DIALOGUE ON THE LOCAL ARTS SCENE THAT IS THE CORNERSTONE OF THE ECONOMIC REVIVAL OF CITIES SUCH AS DETROIT." CRITICCAR DETROIT GIVES VOICE TO CREATIVE DETROIT BY CAPTURING AND POSTING THE PUBLIC'S RESPONSE TO A VARIETY OF CULTURAL EVENTS MIRRORING DETROIT'S DIVERSITY AND CREATIVITY. IF DEEMED A SUCCESS, CRITICCAR WILL EXPAND TO OTHER CITIES. INFINITE MIRROR: IMAGES OF AMERICAN IDENTITY - TRAVELING THE COUNTRY, INFINITE MIRROR: IMAGES OF AMERICAN IDENTITY FEATURES THE PERSONAL, REFLECTIVE, AND AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL WORKS OF ESTABLISHED AND EMERGING 1ST, 2ND AND 3RD GENERATION AMERICAN ARTISTS. THESE MULTI-MEDIA WORKS USE PORTRAITURE AND FIGURATION AS SYMBOLS OF MULTICULTURAL POPULATIONS IN PRESENT-DAY AMERICA TO EXAMINE THE SOCIALLY RELEVANT THEMES OF RACE, GENDER, RELIGION, HISTORY, POLITICS AND FAMILY. THE INFINITE MIRROR TOUR STOPPED IN NEW ORLEANS, LA, AND CORAL GABLES, FL; PREVIOUS STOPS INCLUDE SYRACUSE, NY; KEENE, NH; ADELPHI, MD; FORT WAYNE, IN; AND FORT MYERS, FL.
