During the two years Anne was in hiding with no access to the outside world, she was able to look out the attic window and see the sky and a horse chestnut tree that stood behind the Secret Annex. This tree became her only contact with nature, a powerful symbol. The Anne Frank Center secured 11 saplings from the original tree and is distributing them to carefully-chosen sites across the U.S., each of which represents an important issue of human rights and social justice. Among the sites are Boston Common, Little Rock High School, Liberty Park at the former site of the World Trade Center, and Holocaust centers in Idaho and Michigan. As part of the initiative, we are conducting a four-city series of speaking events in partnership with the Kingdom of the Netherlands to highlight contemporary issues of intolerance. The Consulate General of the Netherands in New York City has contributes substantial funds to develop a website (www.annefranktreeusa.com)that regularly tracks the project acrosss the country.
