Explanation
Part III. Program Serv Accomplishments & Schedule G Part I Fundraising
The John Paul II Newman Foundation, working in close concert with the Catholic Bishop of Chicago (Archdiocese of Chicago) Program Service Accomplishments in 2012 are consistent with their stated focus on Student Housing which the IRS approved as a part of the Foundation's approved purpose as a public charity; 2012 activities continue the multi-year procedures required toward the goal of building a Catholic Student Residence Hall (Dormitory) at the physical location at 1352 S. Union St., Chicago, in proximity to the University of Illlinois, Chicago Campus. In the normal course of such a capital project, the Board of Directors performed signficant due dilligence activities as to vetting and engaging the services of reputable Professional Fundraising Consultants who initially performed a Campaign Development Study to determine that the necessary funds can be raised by implementing a two Phase Process. The Professional Fund Raising Consulting Firm, The Alford Group, was engaged to begin Phase I of the process during 2012. Consulting fees of 144,532 were paid to the Alford Group during 2012 to act strictly in a consulting role to the Foundation to assist the Foundation in executing the capital project as explained below. At no time did the Alford group engage in fundraising activities as required to be disclosed on Schedule G. Upon embarking on a capital project the scope of which requires several million dollars to be raised, it is realistic to have more up-front expenses related to the fund raising campaign process as this period of time also produces the materials for the campaign, recruits campaign leadership, and advises the Board of Directors in the overall process. It is anticipated that the entire dormitory project, expected to raise several million dollars in pledge revenue, will cost the Foundation between 500 and 750 thousand in Fundraising Expenses related to the overall Campaign Goal from project inception to completion. Large, reputable non-profit organizations worldwide expect to incur approximately 20 cents for every dollar raised. Such Fundraising Projects are an extremely efficient way to raise a significant amount of money at minimal relative cost. As there was an unexpected Zoning delay which occurred during the 2012 tax year due to changes in the City of Chicago Ward boundaries changing from one local Alderman to another, the realization of several million dollars of campaign pledges will be recognized as revenues once the new local Alderman responsible for deciding on the zoning ordinance change to build the facility, approves the Zoning Change Request.
Part I, Ques 4a - Program Expenses
19,069 of program expenses represent meetings, travel expense, and ancillary costs relating to the initial planning phase of the Residential Capital Program project described above.
Amended Explanation
The Fundraising fees shown on Schedule G of the originally filed Form 990 for the John Paul II NEWMAN FOUNDATION inadvertently included fees paid to the Executive Director for day-to-day management services related to the operations of the Foundation under the direction of the President, Rev. Patrick Marshall. The sole Professional Fundraising Consulting Firm engaged in a consulting capacity to help the Foundation structure their fundraising project was the Alford Group who is properly identified on Schedule G, Part I as well as explained in detail on Schedule O.
