Organization's Primary Exempt Purpose |
Enhance corporate governance by increasing gender diversity |
of corporate boards through education, information, and |
influence. |

Statement of Program Accomplishments |
In its first year of operation, 2012, The Thirty Percent |
Coalition brought together for the first time a broad |
coalition of governance experts, corporate executives, |
representatives of national women's organizations, and |
institutional investors to exchange information on |
current research and collaborate on initiatives. It |
established itself as a credible source/resource for |
information on the importance of including women on |
corporate boards. It also got the attention of a wide |
range of public companies. |
From an initial 27 people who met late in 2011 to form the |
Coalition, the organization more than doubled to 59 |
members by the end of 2012, as it continued to attract |
a diverse group of organizations and individuals who |
believe that working together they can leverage their |
power to accelerate change in corporate boardrooms. |
The Coalition strives to educate through following, |
encouraging, and publicizing research on the number of |
women represented in the corporate boardroom along with |
other data that supports the business case for gender |

diversity. Members exchange information and articles |
by email and the organization calls attention to |
important research, relevant events, corporate |
governance issues, etc., in its website and social media |
sites. |
An executive director facilitates the work of several |
member committees and acts as spokesperson for the |
Coalition. She has been interviewed/consulted by a |
variety of media representatives including The Glass |
Hammer on different occasions, and The New York Times. |
She has also spoken on a number of panels and conferences |
in different areas of the country throughout the year, |
including a major national conference in Oregon, a major |
Wall Street event entitled " Moving the Needle" and an |
international conference in Washington. |
She also proactively seeks out conversation with corporate |
leaders and diversity officers to encourage them to be |
more active in supporting board gender diversity or |
encourage the company to consider the value of gender |
diversity, both in their executive leadership positions |
as well as the boardroom. During 2012, she had email |
contact with approximately 50 leaders and held |
conversations with 35 of these senior level leaders from |
35 different companies. Five joined the Coalition as a |
result, and several other memberships were under |
consideration at the beginning of 2013. |
The Coalition's Institutional Investor Committee has |
brought together for the first time institutional investors |
such as socially responsible investment firms, public |
employee retirement funds and state treasurers, along with |
representatives of national women's organizations. Their |
first joint effort was to send letters to 41 companies |
in the S&P 500 index who had no women on their board of |
directors. These letters stated the business case for |
diversity and cited research supporting the need to |
diversify their boards. The letters, signed by investors |
representing $1.2 trillion in assets under management and |
by almost 75 people, requested dialogue with the companies |
and offered assistance. Follow-up letters were sent to the |
25 companies in the S&P 500 which did not respond. |
Coalition members began engaging in a dialogue with these |
companies which continued into 2013. |
As 2012 came to a close, a small committee was planning a |
member's Summit to be held in New York in early February |
where the members would exchange information on the best |
strategies for produciong change and hear from a panel of |
state treasurers and the treasurer of the United States. |
