Facts And Circumstances Test
Part II, Line 17a--Democracy: A Journal of Ideas is a nonprofit quarterly journal that in its seven years of existence has survived through public support. In our two most recent tax years, 2010 and 2011, our public support percentage was, respectively, 33.94 percent and 32.68 percent. For the 2012 tax year, our public support percentage was 31.55 percent. We have always been close to the 33 1/3 threshold, and expect to surpass it again within the next couple of years. We operate to attract public support on a continuous basis. From quarterly email blasts announcing our newest issues and soliciting donations from readers to fundraising drives via social media to continuous personal outreach efforts to attract donors, we at Democracy are constantly in search of public donations to keep us afloat. We also derive revenue from a handful of other sources: advertising, subscriptions, newsstand sales, and permissions fees, among others, but those sources are not nearly enough to finance our operations.Because our goal is to educate and spur intellectual debate on issues facing American and international society, we are unusual among publications in that we allow free access to every single article weve ever published. Our website, democracyjournal.org, features the current issue and an archive of all previous issues. Any reader with an Internet connection can access anything weve ever published. We believe this is in keeping with the public-service aims of our organization. Indeed, in 2012, we hit a milestone with our most popular issues ever. Our Summer 2012 issue saw 17,923 page views and 10,365 visits, our best online performance in our history; our Fall 2012 issue ended up being our most in-demand print issue ever, with several hundred copies distributed for free at two events open to the public. Moreover, 2012 saw us expand our audience to new readers, with new visits accounting for 72 percent of our traffic, from 66 percent the previous year.As part of our mission and to raise awareness for the journal, we also hold events that are open to the general public. In 2012, we hosted or co-hosted several events around Washington, D.C.panel discussions, conferences, talksthat were in keeping with our mission of educating the public and sparking public debate. These events were announced on our website and on our social media channels, as well as on partner mailing lists and other publicity targets. Some of these events were co-hosted with other organizations. A January 2012 event on foreign policy was co-hosted with the New America Foundation, a nonprofit think tank; a September conference on asset-building was co-hosted with CFED, an advocacy group.
