| ORGANIZATION'S MISSION | FORM 990 - ORGANIZATION'S MISSION | IN SEPTEMBER 1909, NINE JEWISH WASHINGTONIANS ESTABLISHED THE HEBREW FREE LOAN ASSOCIATION OF GREATER WASHINGTON. ROOTED IN THE TRADITIONAL CONCEPT OF "GEMILUT CHASADIM" - PERFORMING DEEDS OF LOVING KINDNESS - THIS HEBREW FREE LOAN ASSOCIATION HAS GROWN OVER THE PAST 100 YEARS TO AN ORGANIZATION WHICH SERVES THE ENTIRE METROPLITAN WASHINGTON JEWISH COMMUNITY. A FEW THOUSAND WASHINGTONIANS, INCLUDING MONY SUCCESSFUL AND PROMINENT MEMBERS OF THE JEWISH COMMUNITY, HAVE BEEN BENEFICIARIES OF OUR LOAN PROGRAM. OVER THE YEARS, THE TYPES OF BORROWERS AND NEEDS OF THE COMMUNITY HAS CHANGED. INITIALLY, WE HELPED IMMIGRANTS FROM EUROPE, AND THEN LOCAL BUSINESSMEN STRUGGLING TO SURVIVE DURING THE DEPRESSION. IN THE SIXTIESITHE ASSOCIATION LOANED MONEY TO STORE-OWNERS TO REBUILD AFTER THE RIOTS IN DOWNTOWN WASHINGTON. RECENTLY, WE HAVE BEEN ASSISTING JEWISH IMMINGRANTS FROM RUSSIA, ISRAEL AND OTHER PARTS OF THE WORLD TO ESTABLISH THEMSELVES IN THE WASHINGTON AREA. TODAY THERE IS AN INCREASED DEMAND FROM COLLEGE STUDENTS FOR LOANS. WITH CUTBACKS IN GOVERNMENT EDUCATIONAL SUPPORT AND SOCIAL SOCIAL WELFARE PROGRAMS, THERE HAS BEEN A STEADY INCREASE IN LOAN REQUESTS. THE ASSOCIATION RELIES ON CONTRIBUTIONS FROM PEOPLE WHO KNOW OF THE VALUABLE SERVICE OUR ORGANIZATION PROVIDES TO THE COMMUNITY. BECAUSE THE ASSOCIATION IS A 501(C)(3) INSTITUTION, CONTRIBUTIONS ARE TAX DEDUCTIBLE. THE ASSOCIATION'S FUNDS ARE ADMINISTERED BY A BOARD OF TRUSTEES CONSISTING OF MEMBERS OF THE JEWISH COMMUNITY. INQUIRIES AND APPLICATIONS ARE HELD IN STRICT CONFIDENCE BY BY THE BOARD. AN APPLICATION MUST BE SUBMITTED EXPLAINING THE PURPOSE OF THE LOAN AND MUST INCLUDE THREE CO-SIGNERS, WHO ARE ALSO MEMBERS OF THE WASHINGTON JEWISH COMMUNITY. COSIGNERS MUST BE WILLING AND ABLE YO MAKE PAYMENTS IN THE EVENT THE BORROWER DEFAULTS ON THEIR OBLIGATION. APPLICANTS AND CO-SIGNERS ARE SCREENED BY A MEMBER OF THE BOARD AND THEN INTERVIEWED BY OTHER BOARD MEMBERS BEFORE THE LOAN DOCUMENTS ARE SIGNED AND A CHECK IS ISSUED. APPLICANTS MAY BORROW UP TO 10,000 FOR WORTHWHILE PURPOSES PAYABLE FOR 36 MONTHS AT 280 PER MONTH. STUDENTS ARE ELIGIBLE TO BORROW 2500 FOR EACH OF THE LAST TWO YEARS OF COLLEGE OR GRADUATE SCHOOL. STUDENTS REPAY AT THE RATE OF 25 PER MONTH WHILE THEY ARE ATTENDING SCHOOL AND, FOLLOWING GRADUATION, PAY 175 PER MONTH UNTIL THE LOAN IS PAID. AS OUR NAME IMPLIES, ALL LOANS ARE INTEREST FREE. FOR INFORMATION, WRITE TO THE HEBREW FREE LOAN ASSOCIATION, 6121 MONTROSE ROAD, ROCKVILLE, MD. 20852 OR PHONE 301-770-4836. |
