The burden placed on people and families affected by mental illness can be overwhelming. NAMI support groups help ease that burden. Family Support Groups are a NAMI Signature Program designed to offer ongoing peer support for family members of individuals living with mental illness. The support groups are facilitated by trained volunteer family members. In FY 2012 we offered monthly and bi-monthly support groups in 9 communities across Vermont. Each support group was led by two volunteer facilitators - family support group facilitators collectively contributed 480 hours of their time to this program. Due to an increased interest and participation we anticipate expanding this program in 2012. We also offer a warm-line for information and referral, publish a local resource guide and distribute educational brochures.

Family-to-Family is a 12-week, evidence based NAMI Signature Program. Each teaching team is made up of two trained volunteer teachers and one volunteer resource person, all who are family members of an individual living with mental illness. Families and individuals who love someone with a serious mental health condition face great stress, which can have an impact on their own well-being. NAMIs classes offer coping strategies, information and hope. In FY 2012 we offered one family-to-family class in Williston which reached capacity and served 20 families. In FY 2012 we also conducted an internal review of this and other programs.

Professionals have an impact on how peers, consumers and their families are treated. NAMI provides classes for professionals to increase their understanding of the lived experience of individuals and family members affected by mental illness. Provider Education is a NAMI Signature Program. Each teaching team is made up of 2 family members of an individual living with mental illness, 2 individuals living with a mental illness and a mental health care provider who is a family member and/or an individual living with a mental illness. We offered two 15 hour classes in FY 2012 in Burlington and Brattleboro, reaching 27 direct care providers.

The support groups are facilitated by trained volunteer peers. In FY 2012 we offered support groups in 6 communities across Vermont. Each support group was led by two volunteer facilitators and met for 90 minutes on a weekly basis. Due to an increase in participation two groups have started meeting in the Rutland community and additional expansions are planned for FY 2013. Connection Peer Recovery Support Group Facilitators collectively contributed over 936 hours of their time. Additionally, we have a warm line from which we provide supportive listening and information referral. 2 Membership - NAMI Vermont Members help govern NAMI Vermont through their presence at our annual meeting where decisions are made about by-laws and board members are elected. Members also receive a bi-annual NAMI Newsletter, have access to our lending library and receive discounts to NAMI Vermont events.3 Annual Conference -The NAMI Vermont Annual Conference offers high quality, relevant workshops and keynote presentations relevant to providers, family members and individuals living with mental health conditions. In FY 2012 our Annual Conference was held on June 8 and attended by 58 individuals/family members, and 66 providers. 19 scholarships were awarded. Attendees enjoyed an opportunity to network in the Vermont community. Our keynote presenters were Charles Curie, The Curie Group Reducing and Eliminating Seclusion and Restraint The Leadership Factor and Daniel Fisher, MD, PhD, National Empowerment Center Recovery at the individual and Community Levels through Dialogue.
