Explanation:
IRS Re: La Casita Inc, Fed Tax ID # 85-0212283 This letter is to explain why La Casita is late in filing our 2012 990 Tax Form. At the end of the 2009/2010 school (and fiscal) year, La Casita lost its school director, in addition to a complete turnover of the board of directors. No information was passed on to the new director in reference to the imminently due taxes, or when future yearly returns were do, either. More than a year passed before the new board of directors discovered that the taxes had not been filed, and that whomever had filed them in the past, was no longer contracted to do so. La Casita is run by a 100% volunteer board of directors. As a small, non-profit preschool, La Casita has been serving our community for over 40 years by offering affordable high quality early childhood education, and retains the highest national accreditation available to preschools. A late filing penalty would present a significant financial hardship for the school given our limited budget, and our commitment to provide financial aid to over 20% of our families. La Casita has taken steps to ensure that this situation never occurs again, including specifically assigning tax management to a board position, and having hired an administrative assistant to help ensure continuity and accountability in the organization. In addition, La Casita attempted to stagger the terms of board positions, to prevent a void in continuity in leadership. La Casita operated in good faith, and we believe the facts and circumstances outlined above support an abatement of the penalty, especially given that steps have already been taken, and will continue to evolve, to ensure that all future filings will be timely. This is the last of La Casita's late filings, and we are confident that 2013s filing will be prompt and accurate. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or need additional information. We sincerely appreciate your consideration of this request, and assistance in this matter. Helen McDonald La Casita Director
