THE MISSION OF COCINA IS "OPERATING FROM THE CHRISTIAN PERSPECTIVE OF FAITH, HOPE AND LOVE, COCINA PARTNERS WITH INSTITUTION UNIVERS AND UNIVERS MEDICAL CENTER IN OUANAMINTHE, HAITI, TO PROVIDE ACADEMIC AND VOCATIONAL EDUCATION FOR CHILDREN AND ADULTS, PROVIDE HEALTH CARE FOR PEOPLE IN THE AREA AND JUMP-START ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS." THE ORGANIZATION'S PRIMARY EXEMPT PURPOSE IS TO PROVIDE FINANCIAL SUPPORT, EQUIPMENT, MISSION TEAMS AND CONSULTING/MANAGEMENT SERVICES WHICH ARE EXCLUSIVELY CHARITABLE WITHIN THE MEANING OF SECTION 501 (C) (3) OF THE INTERNAL REVENUE CODE OF 1954, TO PROVIDE AND IMPROVE HEALTH CARE SERVICES AND EDUCATION OF THE PEOPLE IN NORTHEAST HAITI. HAVING 13 GRADES. IN JUNE 2012, 98 THIRTEENTH GRADERS GRADUATED. THE SCHOOL EMPLOYS 140 PEOPLE. IN 2009, INSTITUTION UNIVERS WAS NAMED "ONE OF THE TOP TEN SCHOOLS IN THE NATION" BY THE HAITI MINISTRY OF EDUCATION. IN THE ANNUAL NATIONAL TESTS ADMINISTERED BY THE MINISTRY OF EDUCATION FOR 6TH, 9TH, 12TH AND 13TH GRADE STUDENTS, NEARLY 100% OF I.U. STUDENTS PASS THESE TESTS EVERY JUNE.

IN 2008, COCINA OBTAINED FUNDING TO HIRE A HAITIAN STAFF OF 24 PROFESSIONAL AND SUPPORT PERSONAL, AND OPERATE THE CLINIC 45 HOURS PER WEEK. IN SEPTEMBER 2010, BECAUSE OF LOCAL DEMAND FOR GREATER SERVICES AND EXPANDED OPERATING HOURS, THE CLINIC EXPANDED ITS SERVICE HOURS TO 7 DAYS PER WEEK AND 24 HOURS PER DAY---BY ADDING A FEW MORE STAFF. THE STAFF NOW NUMBERS 35--- INCLUDING SEVERAL PHYSICIANS, SEVERAL MEDICAL INTERNS AND NURSE INTERNS, A DENTIST, PROFESSIONAL NURSES, NURSE ASSISTANTS, AN OPTOMETRIST AND A PHARMACIST. UNIVERS MEDICAL CENTER ANNUALLY PROVIDES 15,000 DOCTOR-PATIENT CONSULTATIONS (I.E OFFICE VISITS), 14,000 PHARMACY PRESCRIPTIONS FILLED IN THE CLINIC PHARMACY, 10,000 LABORATORY TESTS, 2,100 HOSPITALIZATION PATIENT STAY-DAYS, 1,100 DENTAL CLINIC VISITS AND 250 SURGERIES (PERFORMED MOSTLY BY U.S. MISSION TEAMS).

PROGRAM SERVICE ACCOMPLISHMENT FOURTH ACHIEVEMENT THE VOCATIONAL EDUCATION PROGRAM OF UNIVERS IS CALLED UNIVERS TECHNIQUE ET COMMERCIAL. IN 2010-11 COCINA SUPPORTED DIRECTOR HUGUES BASTIEN IN EXPANSION OF VOCATIONAL EDUCATION FROM WHAT HAD BEEN JUST CLASSROOM-BASED COURSES (E.G. COMPUTER OPERATIONS, LANGUAGES, BUSINESS ACCOUNTING) TO COMPREHENSIVE LABORATORY COURSES IN AUTO-VEHICLE MECHANICS, INDUSTRIAL- COMMERCIAL SEWING AND REPAIR OF INDUSTRIAL SEWING EQUIPMENT. FUNDING WAS OBTAINED FROM SEVERAL FOUNDATIONS TO JUMP-START THESE THREE NEW VOCATIONAL EDUCATION PROGRAMS. IN THE 2010-11 TIME PERIOD, A SEPARATE BUILDING WAS CONSTRUCTED TO HOUSE THESE THREE NEW MAJOR PROGRAMS, EQUIPMENT AND SUPPLIES WERE PURCHASED AND SEVERAL PROFESSIONAL INSTRUCTORS WERE HIRED. IN THE INITIAL CLASSES (STARTING IN THE SPRING OF 2012) THERE WERE 12 ADULT STUDENTS ENROLLED IN THE AUTO-VEHICLE MECHANICS PROGRAM, FIVE IN THE SEWING PROGRAM AND THREE IN THE SEWING MACHINE MECHANICS PROGRAM. FIFTH ACHIEVEMENT IN 2010, COCINA ADDED "ECONOMIC-DEVELOPMENT" TO ITS MISSION STATEMENT, KNOWING HOW CRITICAL IT IS TO PROVIDE JOBS AND BUSINESSES FOR HAITIANS IN ORDER TO REBUILD THE COUNTRY. DURING CALENDAR YEAR 2011, COCINA OBTAINED SOME OF THE FUNDING NEEDED TO JUMP-START A LARGE CHICKEN-EGG FARM OUTSIDE OUANAMINTHE, BUILT TO HOUSE 5000 LAYING HENS INITIALLY. CONSTRUCTION OF THIS CHICKEN FARM WAS STARTED IN CY 2011 AND COMPLETED IN THE SUMMER OF 2012. IN JULY OF 2012, SOME OF THE HENS STARTED LAYING EGGS, AND THE EXPECTATION AT THE TIME WAS THAT ABOUT 4,000 EGGS PER DAY WOULD BE OBTAINED FOR A COUPLE YEARS---ALL TO BE SOLD IN OUANAMINTHE AND ELSEWHERE IN HAITI TO GENERATE INCOME TO SUPPORT AND SUSTAIN THE CHICKEN-EGG FARM VENTURE. THIS CHICKEN-EGG FARM IS INTENDED TO: 1) PRODUCE JOBS FOR LOCAL HAITIANS, 2) PROVIDE "HAITIAN EGGS AND CHICKENS FOR SALE," INSTEAD OF IMPORTING THESE TWO MAJOR FOOD PRODUCTS FROM VENDERS IN NEARBY DOMINICAN REPUBLIC, 3) PROVIDE EDUCATION AND TRAINING FOR LOCAL HAITIANS WHO WANT TO START THEIR OWN SMALL-SCALE FAMILY-OWNED CHICKEN-EGG BUSINESS, AND 4) SOME OF THE PROFIT FROM THE FARM WILL BE CONTRIBUTED TO INSTITUTION UNIVERS SCHOOL OR UNIVERS MEDICAL CENTER AS A CHARITABLE DONATION TO SUPPORT THEIR OPERATING COSTS.
