What is the organization's primary exempt purpose? THE AFRO-LATIN JAZZ ALLIANCE IS DEDICATED TO PRESERVING THE MUSIC AND HERITAGE OF BIG BAND LATIN JAZZ, SUPPORTING ITS PERFORMANCE FOR NEW AUDIENCES, AND EDUCATING YOUNG PEOPLE IN THE UNDERSTANDING AND PERFORMANCE OF THIS IMPORTANT TREASURE.
Describe the organization’s program service accomplishments for each of its three largest program services, as measured by expenses. In a clear and concise manner, describe the services provided, the number of persons benefited, and other relevant information for each program title.
28 PERFORMANCE THERE EXISTS A LARGE AND UNIQUE REPERTOIRE WITHIN THE BIG BAND GENRE THAT REQUIRES MUSICIANS WHO ARE KNOWLEDGEABLE ABOUT LATIN RHYTHMS, CLAVE, AND AFRICAN-BASED PERCUSSION INSTRUMENTS, AS WELL AS MODERN JAZZ AND SWING. THE AFRO LATIN JAZZ ORCHESTRA (ALJO) PERFORMS COMPOSITIONS OF THE MASTERS SUCH AS MACHITO, TITO PUENTE, CHICO O'FARRILL, ASTOR PIAZZOLA, ANTONIO CARLOS JOBIM, HERMETO PASCOAL, AND OTHERS, AND KEEPS THIS CULTURALLY RICH TRADITION ALIVE BY CONTINUING TO COMMISSION NEW WORKS. THE ALJO IS CURRENTLY IN ITS FOURTH SEASON IN RESIDENCE AT SYMPHONY SPACE ON MANHATTAN'S UPPER WEST SIDE, WHERE IT CONTINUES TO PERFORM THE FULL RANGE OF AFRO LATIN JAZZ FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD. 29 EDUCATION CURRENTLY IN ITS SIXTH ACADEMIC YEAR, THE AFRO LATIN JAZZ ACADEMY OF MUSIC (ALJAM) IS AN IN-SCHOOL RESIDENCY PROGRAM DEDICATED TO PROVIDING INSTRUMENT AND ENSEMBLE INSTRUCTION TO UNDER-PRIVILEGED MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS THROUGHOUT NEW YORK CITY. ALJAM GIVES STUDENTS THE TOOLS TO DEVELOP THEIR MUSICIANSHIP AND EXPRESS THEMSELVES THROUGH MUSIC. MEMBERS OF THE AFRO LATIN JAZZ ORCHESTRA AND OTHER MASTER TEACHING ARTISTS FORM A CORE TEACHING TEAM THAT WORKS WITH STUDENTS TWICE A WEEK FOR THE FULL ACADEMIC YEAR. FIRST ACCOMPLISHMENT FORM 990-EZ, PART III, LINE 28 PERFORMANCE THERE EXISTS A LARGE AND UNIQUE REPERTOIRE WITHIN THE BIG BAND GENRE THAT REQUIRES MUSICIANS WHO ARE KNOWLEDGEABLE ABOUT LATIN RHYTHMS, CLAVE, AND AFRICAN-BASED PERCUSSION INSTRUMENTS, AS WELL AS MODERN JAZZ AND SWING. THE AFRO LATIN JAZZ ORCHESTRA (ALJO) PERFORMS COMPOSITIONS OF THE MASTERS SUCH AS MACHITO, TITO PUENTE, CHICO O'FARRILL, ASTOR PIAZZOLA, ANTONIO CARLOS JOBIM, HERMETO PASCOAL, AND OTHERS, AND KEEPS THIS CULTURALLY RICH TRADITION ALIVE BY CONTINUING TO COMMISSION NEW WORKS. THE ALJO IS CURRENTLY IN ITS FOURTH SEASON IN RESIDENCE AT SYMPHONY SPACE ON MANHATTAN'S UPPER WEST SIDE, WHERE IT CONTINUES TO PERFORM THE FULL RANGE OF AFRO LATIN JAZZ FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD. THE ALJO ALSO PERFORMS NATIONALLY AND INTERNATIONALLY TO CRITICAL ACCLAIM, AND IT HAS RECORDED THREE ALBUMS TO DATE, HIGHLIGHTING THE AFRO LATIN JAZZ CANON AS WELL AS NEW WORKS BY AN ASSORTMENT OF COMPOSERS.
SECOND ACCOMPLISHMENT FORM 990-EZ, PART III, LINE 29 EDUCATION CURRENTLY IN ITS SIXTH ACADEMIC YEAR, THE AFRO LATIN JAZZ ACADEMY OF MUSIC (ALJAM) IS AN IN-SCHOOL RESIDENCY PROGRAM DEDICATED TO PROVIDING INSTRUMENT AND ENSEMBLE INSTRUCTION TO UNDER-PRIVILEGED MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS THROUGHOUT NEW YORK CITY. ALJAM GIVES STUDENTS THE TOOLS TO DEVELOP THEIR MUSICIANSHIP AND EXPRESS THEMSELVES THROUGH MUSIC. MEMBERS OF THE AFRO LATIN JAZZ ORCHESTRA AND OTHER MASTER TEACHING ARTISTS FORM A CORE TEACHING TEAM THAT WORKS WITH STUDENTS TWICE A WEEK FOR THE FULL ACADEMIC YEAR. STUDENTS ARE GIVEN INSTRUMENTS TO PRACTICE AND THEY PERFORM FOR THEIR PEERS, FAMILIES, AND COMMUNITIES AT ANNUAL CONCERTS THROUGHOUT THE ACADEMIC YEAR. ALJAM OPERATES TODAY AT BROOKLYN FRONTIERS HIGH SCHOOL, URBAN ASSEMBLY SCHOOL FOR CRIMINAL JUSTICE IN BROOKLYN, P.S. 18- THE EDWARD BUSH SCHOOL MAGNET SCHOOL IN BROOKLYN AND BRONX STUDIO SCHOOL FOR WRITERS AND ARTISTS IN THE HUNTS POINT NEIGHBORHOOD OF THE SOUTH BRONX.
THIRD ACCOMPLISHMENT FORM 990-EZ, PART III, LINE 30 PRESERVATION THE ALJA IS DEDICATED TO PRESERVING THE MUSIC AND HERITAGE OF BIG BAND LATIN JAZZ, AND IT MAINTAINS A WORLD-CLASS COLLECTION OF LATIN JAZZ MUSICAL SCORES AND RECORDINGS. THE ALLIANCE IS ALSO DEEPLY COMMITTED TO ADVANCING THE ART FORM OF AFRO LATIN JAZZ AND ANNUALLY COMMISSIONS NEW WORKS BY SOME OF THE WORLD'S LEADING COMPOSERS. IN THE PAST SEVERAL YEARS THE ALJA HAS COMMISSIONED WORKS AND BIG BAND ARRANGEMENTS BY GABRIEL ALEGRA, DAVID BIXLER, EDMAR CASTANEDA, VIJAY IYER, GUILLERMO KLEIN, PABLO MAYOR, ARTURO O'FARRILL, DAFNIS PRIETO, MICHELE ROSEWOMAN, EMILIO SOLLA, PAPO VAZQUEZ, BILL WARE, MIGUEL ZENN, AND MANY OTHERS.
