FY12 (CHOIR SEASON 2011-2012) WAS THE BUSIEST AND MOST EXCITING SEASON TO DATE FOR THE SAVANNAH CHILDREN'S CHOIR (SCC). THE SEASON KICKED OFF WITH SUMMER CAMP, WHERE 97 CHILDREN IN 2ND-8TH GRADES ENJOYED A TWO-WEEK, FULL DAY CAMP EXPERIENCE WITH SIX INSTRUCTORS FROM UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA, NORTHWESTERN, UNIVERSITY OF LAS VEGAS AND SCAD. IN ADDITION, 27 "MINI-CAMPERS" (CHILDREN AGED 4-7) ENJOYED ONE-WEEK, HALF DAY INSTRUCTION. ALL PERFORMED TO A STANDING-ROOM ONLY CROWD AT THE END OF CAMP CONCERT. 70 CHILDREN WERE INVITED TO JOIN THE SCC FOR THE 2011-2012 SEASON. AFTER A TWO-DAY KICK OFF RETREAT, THE REHEARSAL AND PERFORMANCE SEASON BEGAN IN AUGUST WITH WEEKLY REHEARSALS WHICH THIS YEAR INCLUDED WEEKLY CONVERSATIONAL ITALIAN LESSONS PROVIDED BY A VOLUNTEER. THE SEASON CONSISTED OF AN EXTREMELY BUSY SCHEDULE OF 36 CONCERTS, SEVERAL WHICH TOOK PLACE ON TOUR ; THE SENIOR CHOIR IN ITALY, AND THE PREP CHOIR IN GREENVILLE, SC. NOTABLE CONCERTS INCLUDED A JOINT CONCERT WITH THE GULF COAST CHILDREN'S CHOIR AND PERFORMING AT ERIC JONE'S RECITAL. ERIC JONES WAS THE ARTIST WHOM THE SCC COMMISSIONED TO WRITE THEIR 5TH ANNIVERSARY PIECE, AND HE PRESENTED HIS WORK (AND THE CHILDREN PERFORMING IT) TO SATISFY HIS REQUIRMENTS FOR HIS MASTERS DEGREE IN COMPOSITION FROM GEORGIA SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY. IN LIEU OF A FORMALIZE ARTIST IN RESIDENCE PROGRAM, THE CHOIR INSTEAD HELD AN OPEN REHEARSAL AND PERFORMED WITH KEITH MILLER AND FRIENDS, WHO GENEROUSLY ORGANIZED A BENEFIT FUNDRAISING CONCERT TO HELP FUND SCHOLARSHIPS FOR THE ITALY TRIP. ARTIST INCLUDED SANDRA PIQUES-EDDY, MEZZO-SOPRANO, SARAH STEWART, SOPRANO, JASON BALDWIN, TENOR AND GREGORY GERBRANDT, BARITONE. THE PREPARATORY CHOIR TRAVELED TO GREENVILLE, SC, WHERE THEY TOURED THE COMMUNITY, VISITED THE CHILDREN'S MUSEUM, PERFORMED AT THE GREENVILLE DRIVE BASEBALL GAME, IN A DOWNTOWN PERFORMANCE SPACE, AND IN WORSHIP AT A LOCAL CHURCH. THE SENIOR CHOIR'S BUSY YEAR CULMINATED IN TRAVEL TO VERONA, ITALY TO PARTICIATE IN THE DAYS OF VERONA FESTIVAL, AN INTERNATIONAL CHOIR COMPETITION. WHILE THERE, THEY TOURED EXTENSIVELY, AND TOOK A DAY TRIP TO VENICE. OF THE 20 CHOIRS PRESENT, SCC WAS THE YOUNGEST (IN AGE) AND ONE OF ONLY 5 TO COME HOME WITH A GOLD MEDAL.
