Form 990, Part III, Line 4d
Form 990, Part III, Line 4d: Other Program Services Description
OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 4: ALASKA PROGRAM - To save ice birds of the Arctic Ocean from polar bears, ORI teamed-up with the Friends of Cooper Island to sponsor Guillemot nesting boxes and to assist George Divoky, Ph.D., with communicating his continuing research of the Black Guillemot colony during a period of unprecedented environmental change and development in the Alaskan Arctic. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 5: OCEAN AIR - in 2012, the Ocean River Institute supports flight operations to advance ocean, coastal, and watershed protection efforts on the West Coast. Ocean Air brings the unique perspective of flight to land, water, and ocean conservation issues on the West Coast and thereby shed new light on otherwise familiar issues. These flights, often flown at low altitude in challenging terrain, require particular aircraft capabilities and flying skills. Private flights highlighting these critical coastal environments have been increasingly difficult to arrange due in part to the high costs of flight operations and lack of suitable aircraft and experienced pilots dedicated to these missions. Ocean Air answers the need of no private aircraft wholly devoted to the protection of coastal ecosystems. Ocean Air helped coalitions of stakeholders in Oregon and Washington launch marine protected area initiatives in their states and bring these efforts to the attention of journalists and decision makers. OA works to achieve specific conservation outcomes, e.g., the establishment of new marine protected area networks, the enactment of new legislation, the protection of specific coastal ecosystems, and the removal of dams to restore river systems. And, OA assists the State of California in its efforts to implement the Marine Life Protection Act (MLPA). OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 6: Florida Sunshine Wildlife Education Program - in 2012, the Ocean River Institute continued to support Captain Nancy Beaver of Stuart Florida to provide educational programs to school and community groups. Capt Beaver has offered her boat as a research platform for dolphin, seabirds, and other researchers in Indian River Lagoon. Sunshine Wildlife has hosted meetings to discuss reducing nitrogen pollution of coastal waters and rallied constituents to speak with county legislators to enact and maintain despite attack, a responsible lawn care ordinance. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 7: FLORIDA NITROGEN PROJECT - Encouraged by passage of a responsible lawn care ordinance in Martin County, ORI worked in concert with local and regional groups for similar ordinances in St. Lucie and Brevard County on Indian River Lagoon. Both efforts failed to pass despite thousands of letters and hours of testimonies. This work goes on as we build a broader, more diverse coalition of advocates for responsible stewardship. In 2012, ORI assisted in thwarting efforts by the State to strip Martin County of its ability to regulate lawn fertilizer applications.
