COLORADO AFRICAN ORGANIZATION (CAO) IS A LOCALLY-RUN NONPROFIT, FOUNDED BY AFRICANS FOR AFRICANS, WITH THE MISSION TO "FOSTER UNITY, ADVOCATE FOR ALL AFRICANS IN COLORADO AND PROVIDE SERVICES." THE PROGRAMS INCLUDE SUPPORT TO AFRICAN REFUGEES AND IMMIGRANTS AND THEIR RESETTLEMENT EFFORTS THROUGH HEALTH, EDUCATION, SOCIAL AND ADVOCACY PROGRAMS.
FIRST ACCOMPLISHMENT DESCRIPTION

COMPUTER LITERACY CLASSES: COMPUTER CLASSES OCCUR FOR 12 HOURS A WEEK, DURING THE WEEK AND WEEKEND. ATTENDANCE CONTINUES TO BE AT 15-18. THE MAJOR COUNTRIES THEY REPRESENT ARE SUDAN, SOMALIA, ETHIOPIA, ERITREA AND THE DRC. COMPUTER SKILLS SUCH AS MICROSOFT WORD USE, RESUME WRITING AND INTERNET JOB SEARCHES ARE AMONG THE TOPICS. TEACHERS ARE VOLUNTEERS FROM THE AFRICAN COMMUNITY. PARENT ENGAGEMENT: IN 2012, 7 CAO TRAINED-COMMUNITY NAVIGATORS, WHO ARE LEADERS IN LOCAL REFUGEE COMMUNITIES, IN A TRAIN-THE-TRAINER MODEL TO EDUCATION THEIR COMMUNITIES ABOUT HOW TO BE ENGAGED IN THEIR CHILD'S EDUCATION. NAVIGATORS ALSO SERVE AS A DIRECT POINT OF COMMUNICATION BETWEEN SCHOOL STAFF AND COMMUNITIES. THIS PROGRAM HAS PARTNERED WITH LOCAL SCHOOL DISTRICTS TO PROVIDE SUPPORT TO BOTH SCHOOLS AND COMMUNITIES. CITIZENSHIP: CAO'S CITIZENSHIP PROGRAM AUGMENTS EXISTING ESL CLASSES. THIS HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL PROGRAM RUNS FREE CITIZENSHIP CLASSES IN THE EVENINGS AND EACH QUARTER FOR AT LEAST 20 STUDENTS. STUDENTS MOSTLY ARE FROM AFRICA, BUT ALL STUDENTS ARE WELCOME.

HIV/AIDS: CAO'S ROBUST HIV/AIDS PROGRAM EDUCATES AFRICAN COMMUNITIES ABOUT HIV/AIDS IN THE RAPP PROGRAM MODEL FOR IMPLEMENTATION, USING CHW OUTREACH AS WELL AS COMMUNITY WORKSHOPS AND OUTREACH TO PLACES LIKE GROCERY STORES, RESTAURANTS, WORKPLACES AND OTHER LOCATIONS AFRICANS FREQUENT.
