THE ORGANIZATION IS FOCUSING ITS EFFORTS ON THE BEAUTIFICATION AND GREENING COMPONENT OF THE KEEP NORFOLK BEAUTIFUL MISSION. IT WILL DO THIS BY DEVELOPING A CITIZEN-BASED EFFORT TO CONVERT VACANT LOTS, UNPLANTED RIPARIAN BUFFERS, MEDIANS, ETC., INTO URBAN SPACES THAT OFFER RECREATION, BEAUTIFICATION, AN INCREASED TREE CANOPY, AND/OR REDUCTIONS IN STORM WATER RUNOFF TO RESIDENTS OF NORFOLK. FONE WILL COLLABORATE WITH THE NORFOLK TREE COMMISSION, THE NORFOLK ENVIRONMENTAL COMMISSION, THE BLOCK-BY-BLOCK NEIGHBORHOOD PRIDE PROGRAM AND LOCAL CITIZEN-BASED AND NON-GOVERNMENTAL ORGANIZATIONS IN DEVELOPING THIS PROGARM AND GUIDING INDIVIDUAL PROJECTS.

IN 2012-13, THE FRIENDS OF NORFOLK'S ENVIRONMENT (FONE) BEGAN WORK ON ITS FOCUSED MISSION OF THE BEAUTIFICATION AND GREENING COMPONENT OF THE KEEP NORFOLK BEAUTIFUL MISSION. THE ALLIANCE FOR COMMUNITY TREES AUTHORIZED FONE TO USE UNSPENT, CONTRACTED FUNDS (20,000) TO INCREASE THE TREE CANOPY IN NORFOLK. THE ORGANIZATION'S BOARD DEVELOPED AN ACTION PLAN AS FOLLOWS: 1. PRESENT THE MISSION CONCEPT TO THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE OF THE NORFOLK ENVIRONMENTAL COMMISSION AND ITS SUSTAINABLE SHORELINES COMMITTEE. (COMPLETED) 2. SHARE THE REVISED MISSION CONCEPT WITH THE CURRENT ORGANIZATION MEMBERSHIP LIST. (COMPLETED) 3. SHARE THE MISSION CONCEPT AND THE ALLIANCE FOR COMMUNITY TREES OPPORTUNITY WITH THE WATERSHED MANAGEMENT TASK FORCE. (COMPLETED) 4. CONVENE A GROUP OF STAKEHOLDERS TO DEVELOP CRITERIA FOR AWARDING FUNDS UNDER THE ALLIANCE FOR COMMUNITY TREES PROGRAM. THE CRITERIA MUST RESPECT THE GOALS OF THE ALLIANCE AND INVITE CITIZEN AND NEIGHBORHOOD STEWARDSHIP. (COMPLETED) 5. RECEIVE, EVALUATE AND AWARD GRANTS THAT INCREASE TREE CANOPY THROUGHOUT THE CITY. (GRANT ANNOUNCEMENTS WILL BE GOING OUT IN EARLY 2014.) IN ADDITION, FONE MAINTAINED ITS STRONG FINANCIAL SUPPORT OF THE ANNUAL CLEAN CITY COOKOUT AND ENVIRONMENTAL EXCELLENCE AWARDS PROGRAM. THIS IS A CRITICAL EDUCATION TOOL FOR KEEP NORFOLK BEAUTIFUL AND THE NORFOLK ENVIRONMENTAL COMMISSION. THE EVENT ATTRACTED 230 ATTENDEES. NORFOLK VICE MAYOR, ANTHONY BURFOOT, PRESENTED OVER 50 AWARDS AND OTHER FORMS OF RECOGNITION TO VOLUNTEERS AND ORGANIZATIONS IN RECOGNIZATION OF THEIR EFFORTS TO CARE FOR THE ENVIRONMENT IN NORFOLK.
