EACH AND EVERY DAY, VOLUNTEERS AND STAFF WORK TOWARD MAKING A MEASURABLE DIFFERENCE IN THE LIVES OF PEOPLE AFFECTED BY SOME OF OUR COMMUNITY'S MOST CHALLENGING AND FAR-REACHING PROBLEMS. COMMUNITY IMPACT REQUIRES COLLABORATION ACROSS ALL SECTORS OF THE COMMUNITY - BUSINESS, EDUCATION, LOCAL GOVERNMENT, NONPROFITS, FAITH BASED, LABOR UNIONS AND THE MEDIA. UNITED WAY OF PALM BEACH COUNTY HOLDS ITSELF AND ITS PARTNERS ACCOUNTABLE NOT JUST FOR ACTION, BUT FOR MEASURABLE RESULTS. IN ADDITION, LAST YEAR UNITED WAY ENGAGED 1,756 DIRECT SERVICE VOLUNTEERS THAT PROVIDED 30,878 HOURS - AT AN ESTIMATED DOLLAR VALUE OF $684,000 - THAT SUPPORTED PROGRAMS THAT IMPROVE THE CONDITIONS FOR THE MOST VULNERABLE RESIDENTS IN OUR COMMUNITY. ALSO IN 2012, IN SUPPORT OF ITS MISSION, UNITED WAY CAREFULLY IDENTIFIED THE COMMUNITY'S NEEDS AND ISSUES AFFECTING PALM BEACH COUNTY RESIDENTS AND INVESTED IN PROGRAMS AND SPECIAL PROJECTS THAT STRATEGICALLY ADDRESSED THOSE NEEDS. AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF CAREGIVING YOUTH'S PROJECT ($75,000) ASSESSED AND ADDRESSED THE CHALLENGES FACED BY CHILDREN WHO PROVIDED CARE FOR ILL, INJURED, ELDERLY OR DISABLED FAMILY MEMBERS. THE PROGRAM PROVIDED A MYRIAD OF NEEDS-DRIVEN AND WRAP-AROUND SERVICES SUCH AS ASSISTANCE WITH SCHOOL WORK, CAREGIVING AND PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT. LAST YEAR, 492 STUDENTS STAYED IN SCHOOL AND EITHER MAINTAINED OR IMPROVED THEIR ACADEMIC STANDING AS A RESULT. ACHIEVEMENT CENTERS' TEEN PROGRAM ($45,000) SERVED LOW-INCOME, MINORITY STUDENTS AND ADDRESSED POOR READING PROFICIENCY LEVELS AND LOW GRADUATION RATES. THE PROGRAM INCLUDED TUTORING BY A CERTIFIED READING SPECIALIST, HOMEWORK ASSISTANCE AND COLLEGE AND CAREER PATH EXPLORATION. LAST YEAR, 98% OF 96 STUDENTS SERVED THROUGH THIS PROGRAM IMPROVED THEIR READING SCORES AND DEMONSTRATED GRADE-LEVEL PROFICIENCY, AND 100% WERE PROMOTED TO THE NEXT GRADE. PALM BEACH COUNTY LITERACY COALITION'S LITERACY FOR LEARNING AND LIFE PROGRAM ($90,000) PROVIDED ACADEMIC ASSISTANCE AND MENTORING FOR YOUTH WHO WERE AT-RISK OF NOT GRADUATING FROM HIGH SCHOOL. LAST YEAR, 198 STUDENTS SERVED THROUGH THIS PROGRAM GRADUATED WITH REGULAR HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMAS. ASPIRA'S COLLEGE BOUND YOUTH PROGRAM ($86,625) PROVIDED COMPREHENSIVE LEADERSHIP SKILLS-BUILDING AND COLLEGE READINESS ACTIVITIES TO AT-RISK HIGH SCHOOL YOUTH FROM HIGH CRIME, IMPOVERISHED NEIGHBORHOODS. LAST YEAR, 34 OF 35 HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS SERVED BY THIS PROGRAM GRADUATED WITH A REGULAR HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA. OF THESE STUDENTS WHO GRADUATED, 30 ENROLLED IN AN INSTITUTION OF HIGHER EDUCATION. OF THE 25 NON-SENIOR STUDENTS SERVED BY THIS PROGRAM, 23 WERE PROMOTED TO THE NEXT GRADE LEVEL.

PALM BEACH COUNTY MEDICAL SOCIETY'S PROJECT ACCESS PROGRAM ($81,000) THIS PROGRAM PROVIDED UNINSURED PALM BEACH COUNTY RESIDENTS WHO HAD AN URGENT MEDICAL NEED WITH HELP IDENTIFYING AND ENROLLING IN INSURANCE PROGRAMS AS WELL AS ACCESS TO A NETWORK OF PHYSICIANS WILLING TO PROVIDE HEALTH CARE SERVICES TO THE UNINSURED AT NO CHARGE. LAST YEAR, 1,719 INDIVIDUALS RECEIVED ASSISTANCE WITH HEALTH INSURANCE, AND 625 INDIVIDUALS RECEIVED HEALTH CARE SERVICES THROUGH THE PHYSICIAN NETWORK. THE VOLEN CENTER'S CARELINK COMMUNITY COACH PROGRAM ($120,000) THIS PROGRAM PROVIDED LOW-INCOME SENIORS WHO WERE MEDICALLY VULNERABLE WITH NEEDED TRANSPORTATION FOR VITAL MEDICAL CARE ALLOWING THEM TO IMPROVE THEIR HEALTH, REDUCE THEIR CHANCES OF BEING HOSPITALIZED AND ALLOWED THEM TO USE THEIR LIMITED FUNDS FOR BASIC NEEDS LIKE FOOD AND HOUSING. LAST YEAR, 1,540 SENIORS RECEIVED MORE THAN 5,642 RIDES FOR MEDICAL CARE. 95% SURVEYED REPORTED THAT THE RIDES IMPROVED THEIR ACCESS TO HEALTH CARE AND QUALITY OF LIFE. HEALTHY MOTHERS HEALTHY BABIES' ACCESS TO CARE PROGRAM ($60,000) LACK OF PRENATAL CARE IS OFTEN LINKED TO THE DELIVERY OF LOW BIRTH WEIGHT BABIES, INFANT MORTALITY, AND A LIFETIME OF PHYSICAL, MENTAL, AND LEARNING DISABILITIES. THIS PROGRAM PROVIDED LOW TO MODERATE INCOME UNINSURED WOMEN WITH HELP IN OBTAINING EARLY AND CONSISTENT PRENATAL CARE, WITH THE GOAL OF DELIVERING HEALTHY BABIES. LAST YEAR, 886 WOMEN RECEIVED ASSISTANCE WITH ACCESSING PRENATAL CARE. 98% OF THESE WOMEN WERE ENROLLED IN HEALTH INSURANCE.

LAST YEAR, 324 FAMILIES RECEIVED FINANCIAL COACHING AND WERE PROVIDED ONE OR MORE SERVICES. PALM BEACH HABILITATION'S SUPPORTED EMPLOYMENT PROGRAM ($65,000) ASSISTED INDIVIDUALS WITH SIGNIFICANT DISABILITIES TO OBTAIN AND MAINTAIN COMPETITIVE COMMUNITY EMPLOYMENT. THIS WAS ACCOMPLISHED THROUGH SHORT-TERM INTENSIVE COACHING ON THE JOB SITE TO ENSURE THAT THE NEEDS OF THE INDIVIDUAL AND EMPLOYER WERE MET. LAST YEAR, 37 OF THE PARTICIPANTS (85%) WERE ABLE TO MAINTAIN THEIR JOB IN THE COMMUNITY. MORE THAN 68,837 INDIVIDUALS AND/OR FAMILIES RECEIVED HELP WITH ACCESSING BASIC NEED OR FINANCIAL STABILITY SERVICES THROUGH A UNITED WAY-FUNDED PROGRAM. UNITED WAY'S VOLUNTEER INCOME TAX ASSISTANCE (VITA) PROGRAM THIS PROGRAM DEPLOYS IRS- TRAINED VOLUNTEERS TO SELECT SITES THROUGHOUT THE COUNTY TO PROVIDE FREE INCOME TAX PREPARATION SERVICES. 155 VITA VOLUNTEERS PROVIDED INCOME TAX PREPARATION SERVICES TO 9,262 HOUSEHOLDS YIELDING $15 MILLION IN REFUNDS ($5.7M ATTRIBUTABLE TO THE EARNED INCOME TAX CREDIT) DURING THE 2013 TAX SEASON
