FORM 990, PAGE 2, PART III, LINE 4D
PROGRAM SERVICE ACCOMPLISHMENT FOURTH ACHIEVEMENT IN 2010, COCINA ADDED "ECONOMIC-DEVELOPMENT" TO ITS MISSION STATEMENT, KNOWING HOW CRITICAL IT IS TO PROVIDE JOBS AND BUSINESSES FOR HAITIANS IN ORDER TO REBUILD THE COUNTRY. DURING CALENDAR YEAR 2011, COCINA OBTAINED SOME OF THE FUNDING NEEDED TO JUMP-START A LARGE CHICKEN-EGG FARM OUTSIDE OUANAMINTHE, BUILT TO HOUSE 5000 LAYING HENS INITIALLY. CONSTRUCTION OF THIS CHICKEN FARM WAS STARTED IN CY 2011 AND COMPLETED IN THE SUMMER OF 2012. IN JULY OF 2012, SOME OF THE HENS STARTED LAYING EGGS, AND THE EXPECTATION AT THE TIME WAS THAT ABOUT 4,000 EGGS PER DAY WOULD BE OBTAINED FOR A COUPLE YEARS---ALL TO BE SOLD IN OUANAMINTHE AND ELSEWHERE IN HAITI TO GENERATE INCOME TO SUPPORT AND SUSTAIN THE CHICKEN-EGG FARM VENTURE. THE CHICKEN FARM AND EGG SALES WAS BEING RUN SUCCESSFULLY IN THE FY ENDING AUGUST 31, 2013, BUT IT HAD NOT YET BECOME PROFITABLE---DUE TO EXCEPTIONALLY HIGH PRICES FOR CORN-BASED PURCHASED CHICKEN FEED AND A CAP IMPOSED ON EGG SALES PRICES BY THE MUCH LARGER CHICKEN-EGG FARMS IN NEARBY DOMINICAN REPUBLIC. THIS CHICKEN-EGG FARM IS INTENDED TO: 1) PRODUCE JOBS FOR LOCAL HAITIANS, 2) PROVIDE "HAITIAN EGGS AND CHICKENS FOR SALE," INSTEAD OF IMPORTING THESE TWO MAJOR FOOD PRODUCTS FROM VENDERS IN NEARBY DOMINICAN REPUBLIC, 3) PROVIDE EDUCATION AND TRAINING FOR LOCAL HAITIANS WHO WANT TO START THEIR OWN SMALL-SCALE FAMILY-OWNED CHICKEN-EGG BUSINESS, AND 4) SOME OF THE PROFIT FROM THE FARM WILL BE CONTRIBUTED TO INSTITUTION UNIVERS SCHOOL OR UNIVERS MEDICAL CENTER AS A CHARITABLE DONATION TO SUPPORT THEIR OPERATING COSTS.
