| Form 990, Part III, Line 4a- Climate (continuation): | Greenpeace U.S. is working with allies to block investments in dirty energy projects, and mobilizing broad public support for a High Arctic sanctuary to protect the region from oil drilling and other industrial exploitation. At the same time, Greenpeace is building demand for clean energy and for U.S. corporate and government leaders to champion a clean energy transition at home and abroad. In 2013, Greenpeace succeeded in securing significant wins on climate and energy issues: - The Port of Coos Bay announced it will not build a new coal export terminal, and port terminal developer Kinder Morgan announced its withdrawal from the proposed coal export project at the Port of St. Helens. - The Bureau of Land Management received no bids on its Maysdorf North Tract coal lease, and rejected Kiewit Mining Company's $0.21/ton bid for Wyoming Hay Creek II Tract coal. - Rackspace, Salesforce, and Box joined Apple, Facebook, and Google as green energy leaders by making 100% renewable energy (RE) commitments. Apple announced it would start building high-tech glass for its products at an Arizona facility that runs on 100% RE, and Facebook announced it will use 100% RE for a new data center in Iowa that will go online in 2015. - Entergy Corporation announced it will close its Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant by the end of 2014. - Duke Energy shut down two of its 14 North Carolina coal-fired power plants, and dropped plans to build two new nuclear reactors at its North Carolina Harris complex and a nuclear reactor complex in Levy County, FL. The North Carolina State Supreme Court struck down Duke Energy's 2012 rate increase and ordered the NC Utilities Commission to reopen the rate case, evaluate the impact on consumers, and determine an appropriate rate. - Shell Oil suspended its 2013 plans to drill in the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas. |
| Form 990, Part III, Line 4b- Forests (continuation): | Greenpeace U.S. is securing Zero Deforestation commitments from influential U.S.-based companies to rid their supply chains of destructively harvested tropical forest and agricultural products, and to support political solutions that will provide long-term tropical forests protection. In 2013, Greenpeace succeeded in securing significant wins for the forests: - Asia Pulp & Paper (APP), the largest pulp and paper company in Indonesia, stopped its practice of deforestation and announced a new Forest Conservation Policy that, if fully implemented, will help resolve social conflicts, protect carbon-rich peatlands and restore critical habitat. - KFC, Pizza Hut and Taco Bell parent company Yum! Brands released a Sustainable Paper-Based Packaging commitment that should ensure the paper and packaging it uses will not drive deforestation worldwide. Yum! Brands is the largest restaurant company in the world. |
| Form 990, Part III, Line 4c- Oceans (continuation): | Greenpeace U.S. is using cutting-edge scientific research, and collaborating with Tribal communities, scientists, NGO allies, and seafood retailers to pressure the U.S. fishery bodies to support / implement sustainable fisheries management and establish ocean sanctuaries in the Bering Sea, Ross Sea and elsewhere. Greenpeace U.S. is also working with NGO allies to pressure the Obama Administration to demonstrate leadership to end whaling and reform the International Whaling Commission to be conservation agency. In 2013, Greenpeace succeeded in securing significant wins for the oceans: - The North Pacific Fishery Management Council voted unanimously to move forward with a short-term plan to identify known areas of coral concentration for potential protection in the Bering Sea canyons, and initiate a Fishery Ecosystem Plan for the Bering Sea. - Safeway made significant improvements to its Safeway Select tuna sourcing policy, and Walmart began offering FAD-free (fish aggregating device) skipjack tuna and pole-and-line albacore tuna. |
