Stimulating, increasing, and improving the marketing of turkeys through promotional avenues: direct advertising in newspapers and magazines and on radio and television; preparation and distribution of press releases; promoting cooperation of organizations that assist in developing new markets and reducing costs of marketing turkeys; participating in promotional events featuring turkeys and turkey products; planning, organizing, and promoting contests that provide publicity for food; and preparation and distribution of leaflets, booklets, films, and other advertising materials that relate to uses of turkey, including recipes which use turkeys and turkey products.

Research on production, distribution, and marketing of turkeys by surveys, examinations, tests, studies, and experiments designed to: develop new turkey products; increase consumer acceptance of turkeys; expand markets for turkeys and new turkey products; improve conditions that adversely affect production, distribution, and marketing of turkeys; and meet the needs of the turkey industries current and future needs. There were a total of nine projects performed at the University of Minnesota these projects were related too: The Turkey Gut Health Initiative; Mitigating Salmonella Risks in Turkey Production Systems; Ratio of Protein and Energy for Improving Poult and Grow-out Performance; Light Spectrum and Temperature Effects on Breeder Hen Turkeys; Improving Poult Performance with Dietary Energy Provisions; Light Spectrum Requirements for Maximizing Breeder Hen Turkey Egg Production; Define Optimal Microbial Communities in the Turkey Gut; Improving Poultry and Grow-out Performance with Dietary Protein and Energy Provision; and Water Testing. In total these nine projects cost a total of $168,439. In addition, research related services were provided by the Minnesota Turkey Growers Association totaling $15,500.

Return Reference Explanation
Part X, Line 2: The Council is exempt from taxation as a nonprofit organization in accordance with 501(c)(5) of the Internal Revenue Code. The Council adopted the recognition requirements for uncertain income tax positions as required by the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) Accounting Standards Codification (ASC) 740-10 (formerly known as FASB Interpretation No. 48, Accounting for Uncertainty in Income Taxes), with no cumulative effect adjustment required. Income tax benefits are recognized for income tax positions taken or expected to be taken in a tax return, only when it is determined that the income tax position will more-likely-than-not be sustained upon examination by taxing authorities. The Council has analyzed tax positions taken for filing with the Internal Revenue Service and the state jurisdiction where it operates. The Council believes that income tax filing positions will be sustained upon examination and does not anticipate any adjustments that would result in a material adverse affect on the Council's financial condition, results of operations or cash flows. Accordingly, the Council has not recorded any reserves, or related accruals for interest and penalties for uncertain income tax positions at February 28, 2013. The Council is subject to routine audits by taxing jurisdictions; however, there are currently no audits in progress for any tax open tax periods. The Council's open audit periods are the years ended February 2011, 2012, and 2013.

Part I, Line 2: The Council receives quarterly invoices from the Regents of the University of Minnesota stating how the funds were used and distributed. Then, before the Council pays the invoice, it also requires that the principal investigator/researcher submit a progress report on their research. Contributions and sponsorship amounts are reviewed and approved by the Board of Directors and Executive Director before payments are made.
