CONSUMER PROTECTION - VPIRG SERVES AS A WATCHDOG, PROTECTING THE PUBLIC INTEREST WHEN CORPORATIONS ATTEMPT TO PUT PROFITS OVER PEOPLE, AND ENSURES THAT THE POLICIES AND LAWS THAT WE DO PASS TO PROTECT THE PUBLIC INTEREST ARE IN FACT ENFORCED. IN 2013, VPIRG CARRIED OUT A MAJOR CONSUMER PROTECTION EFFORT TO ASSERT AND PROTECT CONSUMERS' RIGHT TO KNOW WHAT'S IN THE FOOD THEY EAT. WORKING WITH PARTNERS IN THE RIGHT TO KNOW GMO'S COALITION, VPIRG CAMPAIGNED TO REQUIRE THE LABELING OF FOODS THAT CONTAIN GENETICALLY MODIFIED ORGANISMS ("GMOS"). OUR ORGANIZERS TURNED OUT HUNDREDS OF ACTIVISTS TO A HEARING AT THE STATE HOUSE SUPPORTING THE BILL. VPIRG ALSO WORKED WITH LEGISLATIVE ALLIES TO BE THE FIRST LEGISLATURE IN THE NATION TO PASS THROUGH A HOUSE CHAMBER A BILL TO REQUIRE GMO LABELING, SETTING US UP FOR FINAL PASSAGE IN 2014.
