Explanation
Form 990, Part III, Line 4d: Other Program Services Description
OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 4: Guatemala: Solace continued to support the education, feeding, medical care and housing of 14 children at Casa Del Ninos. In addition we installed a deep water well which will serve not only the orphanage but also the community. Water is a huge problem in the Malacatan area. In the dry season people are forced to purchase water including our operations at Casa Del Ninos which is a big financial drain on the community. We also launched several in-house businesses to help generate income for the CDN. We started a bakery, continued with the fish farming business and raised poultry. Our goal is to make CDN completely self-sufficient in 5 years. During 2013, Solace provided ongoing assistance. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 5: Nepal: As part of Solace's commitment to women, fair wage and the use of recycled materials we created a line of products using rubber from recycled tires, used snack chip wrappers and used rice bags. As this was a totally new product in the market place we spent over 1 year training women and families, working on designs, making samples, testing the market, purchasing materials, getting production online and shipping products to market both in Nepal and the USA. We also opened a shop in Kathmandu which served not only as a retail outlet for these fair wage recycled products but also provided a training facility for construction of samples in house and training facility for beaded and woven jewelry craft and practical instruction in international sales, marketing and packaging. Furthermore the shop provided a way for us to understand the local and expatriate market and therefore refine our designs for the wholesale export market.Ongoing support for this cottage industry. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 6: In 2013, Solace responded to the refugee crisis in Lebanon with an estimated 1 million Syrian refugees, many whom are living with no heat, no water or beds, crammed into uncomfortable housing. Lebanon has chosen not to set up refugee camps, so the refugees are living in substandard housing, wherever they can find shelter. Most are in a total state of confusion, schock and truama. Many of the refugees are women and children, having lost their fathers, sons, brothers in war torn Syria, from where they have fled for their lives. Solace began setting up schools for some of the refugee children with a hot lunch program.
