Explanation
Form 990, Part III, Line 4d: Other Program Services Description
OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 4: Promoting Independence: United Way supports eleven programs that work to Promote Independence. United Way program partners help individuals and families in New London County overcome obstacles to achieving or maintaining physical, social and financial independence so they may become contributing members of our community. Programs receiving United Way support provide specialized workforce training and employment support, provide those with severe disabilities with information, resources and support, provide single mother and those battling with addiction with transitional housing and life skills, and give ex-offenders employment training and support services. One example of a result from a Promoting Independence partner is from Safe Futures and the agency's Individual and Family Support program which offers nine fully-staffed apartments for victims transitioning from homelessness due to domestic violence. The program consists of weekly case management designed to promote self-sufficiency, life skills development, counseling to understand the effects of the violence they have endured and referrals, as needed. All of the residents successfully accessed permanent housing. Six of those residents secured employment upon leaving the program. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 5: Donor Directed Designations: Donations directed by donor are processed and sent to the applicable organization. Designations to United Way agencies are included in with the grant amount reported for the service area supported. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 6: Gemma E. Moran United Way Labor Food Center:According to a U.S. Census Bureau study, as per 2012 more than 22,000 people in New London County are living below the poverty level. In addition, one out of every six children is food insecure, meaning, they have limited or uncertain access to adequate food. The Gemma E. Moran United Way/Labor Food Center is making a difference for the hungry and food insecure in southeastern Connecticut. The Food Center provides food and non-food items to more than 90 food distribution sites throughout New London County. These sites include shelters, food pantries, after-school programs, day care centers, community meal sites, and programs for the elderly and youth. In May 2013, the Food Center established the Mobile Food Pantry to focus on the distribution of fresh, healthy foods to New London County residents. By the end of FY2014 the Mobile Food Pantry program had established nine distribution sites.Last year, the Food Center distributed 2,475,139 pounds of food which in turn helped provide the equivalent of 2,062,615 meals and snacks, at no cost, to those in need throughout New London County. During the Thanksgiving holiday last year, the Food Center distributed 2,348 Thanksgiving birds along with traditional side dishes and vegetables to 35 New London County agencies and 76 additional families. These included 2,089 turkeys and 259 chickens. An additional 3,225 pounds (more than 800 turkeys) were distributed through the Mobile Food Pantry during the months of November and December 2013.In addition to providing operating expenses, United Way also helps to mobilize groups of volunteers to help sort and organize food at the Food Center throughout the year as well as encouraging local businesses and organizations to run food drives to help keep the shelves full. Through the program, connections with church organizations, local town officials, politicians, social service departments, schools and other local businesses and companies have been established and nurtured.
