In accordance with the FASB ASC topic on Income Taxes, the Association has performed an evaluation of its tax positions and believes it has appropriate support for its tax positions taken. The Association recognizes interest and penalties accrued related to unrecognized tax benefits in accounts payable and accrued expenses in the consolidated statements of financial position and management and general expenses in the consolidated statements of activities and change in net assets. During the years ended December 31, 2013 and 2012, the Association did not have net taxable income from unrelated business activity; therefore, there is no provision in these financial statements for income taxes or interest and penalties related to unrecognized tax benefits.

Grants must be applied for annually. Under age 24, (waiver for active duty time) sons or daughters of regular or associate AUSN members are eligible to apply for consideration. Applicants must be accepted for admission to an accredited college or technical institution in the United States and must remain a full-time student in good standing. Eligibility ends when the student either graduates or is no longer enrolled full-time. Full-time is defined as maintaining, throughout the school year, an average course load of 15 credit hours, with a minimum of 12 credit hours in any semester or quarter. Applicants are selected on the basis of financial need, scholastic and leadership ability, potential, character and personal qualities. Financial need, determined by reviewing the family's financial circumstances and aid awarded by other sources, is the principal factor in selection; however, all factors listed are carefully considered in making the final selections. Students may apply for grants during their senior year of high school and up to their senior year in college. Grants are school-year specific and must be applied for annually. No more than two grants will be awarded to any individual student. The Educational Assistance Committee meets in May of each year. Applications are individually reviewed and rated by a majority of the committee. Selection criteria is as stated above, but the organization and presentation of the application will also be considered. Scholarship grants are sent directly to the school for credit to the student's individual account.
