What is the organization's primary exempt purpose? Promote increased productivity and improved competitiveness in the gulf coast shipbuilding industry by raising public awareness of the shipbuilding industry in the gulf coast, establishing a steady stream of trained workers for the gulf coast shipbuilding and repair industry.
Describe the organization’s program service accomplishments for each of its three largest program services, as measured by expenses. In a clear and concise manner, describe the services provided, the number of persons benefited, and other relevant information for each program title.
28 Held annual meeting and other meetings to update members on state of the industry, provide professional development opportunities and updates on the organization. Meetings included breakout sessions led by industry experts in the areas of Health and Safety, production, welding, standardized training, tip-tig welding process, workforce development and nationally recognized credentials. Over 200 individuals attended these meetings.

29 GSSC partnered with the South Alabama Workforce Development Council for Alabama (SAWDC) Region 9 to design, construct, and staff the Maritime World in the third annual SAWDC Worlds of Opportunity job awareness fair for 8th grade students. Over two days, over 10000 8th grade students from public school systems in 6 Alabama counties were exposed to many different career "worlds". In the Maritime World there were hands on exhibits covering many of the craft trades like pipe fitting, electrical, welding, rigging, ship fitting, composite materials, as well as engineering, ship design, HR and others. In addition to providing exhibits and hands on activities (including a welding simulator), GSSC provided hard hats and safety glasses to students to emphasize safety and safe working habits. GSSC played a major role in the planning of the overall event which included 11 different "worlds" of work. Many hours of planning, preparation, coordination of assets, displays, give-a-ways and countless volunteer man-hours were provided by GSSC and its members, the value of which is not shown here. Expenses shown here are actual funds spent to support this program. GSSC also supported the Mississippi coast Pathways2Prosperity by donating funds and GSSC member employees support.

30 GSSC continued the support of regionally recognized, standardized modular shipfitter curriculum and credentials to be used to train new and incumbent shipbuilding and repair workers. GSSC continued support and maintenance of the entry level shipfitter curriculum, including students guides, instructor guides, performance based assessments and power point teaching aids. This activity supports our long range goal of establishing a steady stream of trained workers for the industry. GSSC continues to promote the Shipfitter Boot Camp model and encourages other trainin providers to offer these boot camps. Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College and others have offered an additional boot camps using the GSSC developed model and curriculum. To date the program has produced a curriculum and instructional model that results in 100% employment of students who complete the program. Over 100 students have been trained and become successfully employed. The program has gained national attention with colleges and for profit training providers as far away as Oregon and Jacksonville, FL requesting copies of the curriculum. An outgrowth of this effort is National Maritime Education Council which is detailed as another Program Service Accomplishment.

GSSC contracted with the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) on a partnership to develop maritime specific curriculum by using existing NCCER curriculum and certifications created for industrial construction as a basis. In addition, GSSC continued as a NCCER Accredited Training Sponsor. GSSC continued meetings and independent reviews with industry subject matter experts in welding, electrical and pipe fitting trades to evaluate the NCCER materials and to identify gaps in order to determine the costs for NCCER to develop curriculum for three (3) trades and a maritime shipbuilding core curriculum. Continued Lighthouse Campaign to raise funds to have NCCER develop the training curricula and assessments. Out of the Lighthouse Campaign, the National Maritime Education Council (NMEC) began to be formed. GSSC, through its partnership with NCCER has fiscal responsibility for the NMEC (Lighthouse Campaign) funds until such time NMEC becomes a separate legal entity and applies for non-profit status. NCCER has begun development of the training materials. Introduction to the Maritime Industry, a supplement to the NCCER Core Curriculum and Maritime Pipefitting have been developed and released for use in the industry. Structural Fitting is in development now with a release target of May 2014. Assessments are also being developed.
