THE RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE CHARITIES (RMHC) OF PITTSBURGH OPENED ITS ORIGINAL FACILITY IN JULY 1979 IN THE SHADYSIDE SECTION OF PITTSBURGH. IN 1992 THE CORPORATION ACQUIRED AND RENOVATED AN ADJACENT APARTMENT BUILDING WHICH IT OPENED IN EARLY 1994. IN SEPTEMBER 2008 RMHC SOLD THESE TWO PROPERTIES FOR $2 MILLION AND ENTERED INTO A LEASE AGREEMENT WITH CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL OF PITTSBURGH OF UPMC TO RELOCATE TO THEIR NEW CAMPUS IN THE LAWRENCEVILLE SECTION OF THE CITY. WHILE RENOVATING THE NEW SPACE, RMHC OCCUPIED THE SHADY AVENUE PROPERTIES RENT FREE FOR 10 MONTHS. IN OCTOBER 2009, RMHC RELOCATED TO ITS NEW FACILITY. NEARLY TRIPLING IN SIZE, RMHC MEETS AN URGENT NEED, PROVIDING FAMILIES WITH AFFORDABLE, TEMPORARY HOUSING. YET, RMHC IS MORE THAN JUST A ROOF OVER THEIR HEADS. DURING THIS EXHAUSTING AND EMOTIONAL TIME, THE HOUSE OFFERS THE COMFORTS OF HOME, WHILE ALSO PROVIDING SUPPORT AND ENCOURAGEMENT FROM STAFF AND VOLUNTEERS. THE MODEST ONE BEDROOM APARTMENTS CONNECTED TO CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL PROVIDES A SENSE OF PRIVACY. EACH UNIT IS EQUIPPED WITH A BEDROOM, PRIVATE BATH WITH SHOWER, KITCHENETTE AND LIVING AREA. A DONATION OF $15 PER NIGHT IS REQUESTED AND IS WAIVED WHEN DEEMED APPROPRIATE.
