THE PROJECT IS MANAGED BY THE HAYWOOD COUNTY ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT COMMISSION. THEY HAVE DEVELOPED A WEB-SITE, FARM MAP AND A "HAYWOOD COUNTY-NORTH CAROLINA MOUNTAIN GROWN" LABEL AND LOGO TO IDENTIFY FARM PRODUCTS BEING MARKETED UNDER THIS PROJECT. THE PROJECT HAS HIGHLIGHTED 37 FARMS AND 28 RESTAURANTS AFFILIATED WITH THIS PROGRAM. 14,120
    2 ASSIST THE GREATER HAYWOOD COUNTY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE IN A BUSINESS PLAN CONTEST WHEREBY WINNERS ARE AWARDED PRIZES OF UP TO 8,000 TO START OR CONTINUE A BUSINESS IN HAYWOOD COUNTY AND TO STRENGTHEN ITS FINANCIAL BASE AND PROMOTE NEW JOBS. THE TOP THREE SELECTIONS ARE AWARDED FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE. THERE ARE USUALLY TEN TO TWENTY BUSINESS PLANS SUBMITTED. 3,650
    3 THE EXPENDITURE TO THE UNC SCHOOL OF GOVERNMENT WAS AN EFFORT TO ASSIST HAYWOOD COUNTY WITH SUFFICIENT INFORMATION TO MARKET THE OLD HAYWOOD COUNTY HOSPITAL. THIS FACILITY HAD MORE RECENTLY BEEN USED TO HOUSE THE HAYWOOD COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL SERVICES. THE COUNTY HAS PROVIDED A NEW FACILITY FOR THE DEPARTMENT, LEAVING THE OLD HOSPITAL BUILDING EMPTY. THE STUDY TO BE CONDUCTED BY THE UNC SCHOOL OF GOVERNMNET WAS AN EFFORT TO DETERMINE THE BEST MARKET FOR THE BUILDING AND THROUGH THESE EFFORTS FACILITATE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AND TO POSSIBLY CREATE JOBS IN THE COUNTY. 4,000
