28 Sister Parish, Inc. 2013 Program Activities Delegation Travel Sister Parish organized and facilitated nine delegations in 2013, six traveling from the U.S. to Central America and three traveling from Guatemala to the U.S. Activities and Events El Salvador Sister Parish continues to coordinate with The Association of Communities for the Development of Chalatenango (CCR), supporting program work in communities, participating in the bi-monthly sistering meetings, and attending events like the 32nd annual commemoration of the 1981 massacre in Rio Sumpul and the celebration of the CCR's 25th anniversary. In 2013, staff carried out 11 community visits to the 4 Sister Parish communities in El Salvador, and organized four meetings with the El Salvador Directiva, which serves as an advisory board to the U.S.-based Board of Directors. In April, Sister Parish staff and board members organized a Southern Encounter in El Salvador. Representatives of 8 of the southern communities and 5 of the northern churches gathered to reflect on our 25th anniversary and vision together for our future. Guatemala Sister Parish representatives and staff in Guatemala organized and participated in 2 country-wide representative meetings held in Guatemala City and 4 meetings with the Guatemala Directiva, which also serves as an advisory board to the U.S.-based Board of Directors. Over 50 people participated in the annual Guatemala Solidarity Walk, during which participants marched in solidarity with global movements for peace and justice. Throughout the year, staff in Guatemala carried out 42 community visits to the 9 Sister Parish communities in Guatemala. United States Sister Parish held 1 in-person board meeting and 3 teleconference meetings. A number of individuals and churches participated in the annual solidarity walk to show solidarity with all people working for a more just world and to raise funds for Sister Parish, Inc. Staff and volunteers also organized at least 3 events in Minnesota for nearby supporters and board members carried out in-person visits to 5 of the northern churches. Sister Parish also released a new documentary this year. Sister Parish facilitates and oversees community to community project funding Las Margaritas II, Ixcán, Guatemala and St. Francis of Assisi, Raleigh, NC *Scholarship Project: Provided support for tuition and school supplies for 22 students in primary and secondary school. *Computer and Internet Center: IN PROGRESS. Provides the community with a fully functional computer center where students can receive their computation diploma and community members have access to the internet. The center could also help improve communication with Sister Parish Inc. and St. Francis of Assisi. Sepalau, Alta Verapaz, Guatemala and Corpus Christi Catholic Church, Baltimore, MD *Community Chicken Initiative: IN PROGRESS. Provided community members with supplies and capital to open a small chicken farm for local consumption. The chicken farm was closed after an infection killed many of the chickens and the surviving ones were sold. Project is currently under evaluation to determine next steps. Tierra Nueva I, Chinautla, Guatemala and Faith Lutheran, West Fargo, ND *Multifunctional sports court: IN PROGRESS.
