The organization conducts educational programs, hosts special events, and encourages the public to visit exhibitions and programs. The organization carries out its mission using the 1809 Jackson Homestead historic house and collections, owned and provided by the City of Newton. During FY2013, the organization completed restoration of the 1734 Durant-Kenrick House and Grounds which further expands educational opportunities for the public and preserves an important resource for the people of Newton.

The by-laws of the Newton Historical Society, Inc. were updated on September 27, 2012. Under these by-laws the Board of Directors may delegate any or all of the powers of the directors to certain board committees, except those powers which by law, by the Articles of Organization or by these By-laws they are prohibited from delegating. Unless the directors otherwise determine, the Executive Committee shall have all of the powers of the directors during intervals between meetings of the directors.

Historic Newton's conflict of interest policy was adopted in November 2013. It states the following: 1. Each director, principal officer and member of a committee with Board delegated powers shall annually sign a statement which affirms that such person: a. Has received a copy of the conflict of interest policy, b. Has read and understands the policy, c. Has agreed to comply with the policy, and d. Understands NHS is charitable organization and in order to maintain its federal tax exemption it must engage primarily in activities that accomplish one or more of its tax-exempt purposes. 2. Each voting member of the Board shall annually sign a statement that declares whether such person is an independent director. 3. If at any time during the year, the information in the annual statement changes materially, the director shall disclose such changes and revise the annual disclosure form. 4. The Executive Committee shall regularly and consistently monitor and enforce compliance with this policy by reviewing annual statements and taking such other actions as are necessary for effective oversight.
