About NJAFA New Jersey Aid For Animals, Inc. (NJAFA) is the only all-volunteer
. humane organization helping animals in the City of Camden.
. We receive no government funding, no municipal funding and have been
. able to deliver all our programs with only donations from the public.
. .
. Established in 2005, NJAFA is an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization
. with the mission to enrich the life of every animal we touch, provide programs for domestic
. animals on wellness, humane education, spay and neuter with a focus on impoverished
. communities; report abuse and pursue justice for abused animals.
. .
. NJAFA runs very lean with volunteers and a supportive advisory board that allows us to save
. money on professional services; the funding can go toward the animals. A group of
. professionals makes up our Advisory Board who lend their expertise to NJAFA thus saving us
. thousands of dollars each year. We have an attorney, Facebook expert and CPA, as well as two
. individuals with a corporate and business background who act as consultants for important
. decisions regarding NJAFA.
. .
. The only paid professional is a bookkeeper as NJAFA feels it is important to keep the books and
. a check and balance system with individuals not connected to our board or advisory board.
. All the services of the bookkeeper are reviewed annually by our CPA with stellar credentials.
. .
. When you give to NJAFA you are donating something of value in exchange for other
. things of value -- the good work of our organization and the benefit it provides to the

. communities we are serving. This is a fair exchange, one both we and our donors can feel good about.
. .
. COMMUNITY OUTREACH AND COLLABORATION
. Whether collaborating with the local fire dept., FOP Lodge in Camden, or other
. organizations to network an animal, NJAFA attends meetings made up of the
. infrastructure of different communities, vis a vis, clergy, academics
. educators, police, fire, private businesses and other non-profits to recognize
. collaborate on the animal problems within that area.
. .
. In addition to rescuing and adopting out dozens of dogs and cats, some
. of NJAFA's signature programs and accomplishments for 2013 include:
. .
. FETCH. FIX. RETURN
. Since 2005, NJAFA has made hundreds of roundtrips from their sanctuary to
. Camden, NJ to pick up dogs and cats from residents who don't have transportation to take them
. to the vet for spay-neuter services, Fetch, Fix, Return. NJ Aid for Animals' signature program
. on wheels for Camden pets enters its first decade of service for pets to access spay-neuter
. services at low-cost clinics.
. .
. Fetch, Fix, Return saves lives. Transportation is a major barrier for city residents to access spay-
. neuter services for their pets. There are no spay-neuter clinics in Camden, one of the poorest
. cities in the country and NJAFA is the only all-volunteer charity offering this life saving service.
. .
. There is a regional benefit to Fetch, Fix, Return. Animal control impounds hundreds of stray
. cats and dogs annually in Camden County alone. In the long-run, Fetch, Fix, Return will save
. taxpayer dollars currently spent on the pick-up, impounding and euthanasia of unwanted and stray animals
. With its name, Fetch, Fix, Return formalizes an activity NJAFA has undertaken since
. we began. We bring animals to and from the low-cost clinics outside Camden
. and return them to their owners the same or following day. It's gratifying to help residents but
. our assistance has been limited in scope because NJAFA delivers a wide range of
. services with very limited funds in carrying out its mission.
. .
. Fetch, Fix, Return has a measurable impact too. The "Fetch" program goals include:
. Fetch and increase the number of animals which can be transported annually;
. Fix residents' dogs and cats through spay-neuter procedures and enrich their lives by
. providing other basic services, including annual inoculations.
. Return and save animals lives by decreasing the number of unwanted litters of puppies
. and kittens and reduce the number euthanized in shelters as a result
. .
. Over the last ten years, NJAFA transported hundreds of dogs and cats to low-cost clinics to be altered.
. .
. MEDICAL NECESSITY
. In 2013, NJAFA took on several seriously injured or sick animals and paid for their medical
. treatment. All survived and are living in wonderful homes.
. .
. LOST NO MORE
. NJAFA, the leader in innovative programs for underserved animals in Camden
. CITY, NJ ANNOUNCED A NEW MICROCHIP PROGRAM. DOGS ESPECIALLY IN CAMDEN DON'T JUST BECOME LOST. THEY
. are abandoned or dumped. If a dog is chipped, animal control will be able to identify who the culprit was
. and charge them. The ASCPA in New York, liked our idea so much they donated $7,500 to NJAFA to
. administer l,000 chips to Camden animals.
. .
. Microchips reunite lost and runaway dogs with their families. There is a very low reclaim rate at the local
. shelter but the animal control can scan the dogs when they are picked up and return them before they even
. hit the shelter. This keeps space open at the shelter and more dogs from being euthanized.
. .
. Lastly, the people who buy dogs to use as bait or weapons and train the dogs to fight will be permanently
. identified. When the dog gets loose or are found dumped, the dog can be traced back to the owner (like
. guns with serial numbers) and charged.
. .
. NJAFA introduced the chips at our vaccine clinic in April, 2013 where over 350 animals were chipped.
. NJAFA is searching for a way to stop the influx of dogs being euthanized. Even if these chips only
. reunite a small percentage of dogs to owners over a year that is less dogs being put to sleep. The chips
. were implanted by trained vets and vet techs.
. .
. Dog House Project
. NJAFA's focus is on recycling, reusing and rehoming. From 2007 NJAFA partnered
. with a local fence company to make dog houses from leftover privacy fences. We add a little
. carpet flap on the front to keep it extra warm, and straw for bedding. NJAFA delivers the warm
. dog houses to dogs forced to live outside in Camden, NJ, the most violent city in America. It's
. a win win for the environment, Burger Fence and of course the pooches. Although NJAFA
. receives a very generous discount on the houses, we still solicit individual and corporate
. sponsors to donate so we can keep up with the demand. If we don't get a sponsor we can't get the
. dog houses. The same fence company also put up a gate at a home where a chained dog was
. living that had a fence but no gate. The only thing between life at the end of a chain and a big
. yard to play was a gate. In 2013 we gave out 27 dog houses.

. .
. VACCINES TO ANIMALS IN CAMDEN, NJ
. NJAFA is the only all-volunteer organization that brings life saving vaccines to the
. animals in Camden City where residents have no means of transportation to get their animals to a
.. vet. At the vaccine clinics we are able to sign people up to have their animals fixed, and
. the Fetch. Fix. Return program will transport these dogs and cats to the local low cost clinic
. then bring them back after they are spayed or neutered. In 2012 we vaccinated over 500 dogs and
. cats and transported dozens of cats and dogs to be altered.
. .
. SOLUTIONS TO ANIMAL ISSUES HELP PEOPLE TOO
. Offering solutions to problems with animals is a daily event for NJAFA. We receive and
. return dozens of calls and emails every day from people all over the State of NJ who either need
. to give up an animal, don't have food, can't afford medical treatment or a myriad of other
. reasons. We offer a list of medical financial aid organizations, low cost vet services, help to
. rehome ananimal, offer food if they can't afford or just try to walk the individual through
. the problem and find a solution together.
. .
. NJAFA works very closely with local animal control and cruelty officers in Camden and
. frequently testifies for abuse cases and intentional or accidental breeding which is prohibited.
. .
. ANIMAL ABUSE
. NJAFA is the only organization that reports AND follows the abusers through the court
. system. Local humane law enforcements report and get convictions but no one follows the
. abusers through the court system to ensure the abuser paid his dues, restitution or completed his
. community service. NJAFA will also file the charges if local law enforcement or humane
. enforcement does not want to file charges. Founder and President Kathy McGuire is the only
. private citizen in NJ that has ever received a conviction on another private citizen without help of
. humane law enforcement. NJAFA is still following up with Adult Probation on an abuser that
. owes us over $4,000 in restitution for taking care of his pit bulls involved in dog fighting...

. .
. EDUCATIONAL AWARENESS
. In 2013 NJAFA had a dog bite expert visit S. Jersey for National Dog Bite Prevention Week.
. The expert who investigates fatal dog on human attacks was here for the week educating other rescues,
. shelters, animal control officers, vets and staff and the public on the safe handling of dogs. Lectures and
. seminars were offered to anyone that wanted to attend. Through knowledge of proper handling of
. especially potentially dangerous dogs we can save more humans and in the end dogs too.
. .
. We held a National Pit Bull Awareness Day in October. Speakers
. from pit bull rescue groups, attorneys, trainers and other experts educated
. the public about owning pit bulls, the challenges and safety precautions.
. .
. BIO of President & Founder
. Kathy McGuire, President & Founder of NJAFA an animal charity
. whose tag line is "advocacy, action, impact", hit the ground running when she moved to
. New Jersey in 2003 after living in Ohio, Hawaii and California. With a degree in Marketing and
. Business, a background in nonprofit work and almost two decades in animal rescue, McGuire
. layered her degree with certifications including Animal Control Officer, Animal Cruelty
. Investigator and Advanced Training in Dog Fighting to provide a foundation of
. knowledge for her organization. In 2005, NJ Aid for Animals was born.
. .
. In addition to snagging boxer, Bernard Hopkins to pose for her "Operation Knockout" project to
. spread her mission of neutering pit bulls, she is also an awardee of the 2010 South Jersey
. Magazine "40 Super Local Women" and the 2011 National Association of Women Business
. Owners "Nova" Award. McGuire is recognized in dozens of articles for her compassionate work
. with animals in the most violent city in America (Camden) including a front page article in
. The Courier Post and Camden County Freeholders' Volunteer of the Month award.
