Explanation
FORM 990, PART III, LINE 4A
CHEYENNE COUNTY HOSPITALS MISSION IS TO PROVIDE SAFE, HIGH QUALITY, TEAM BASED HEALTHCARE TO CHEYENNE COUNTY, KANSAS AND SURROUNDING AREAS. WE ARE A CRITICAL ACCESS HOSPITAL SERVING A GEOGRAPHIC AREA WITH A FRONTIER AREA POPULATION (POPULATION DENSITY OF 2.70) AND HAVE BEEN DESIGNATED AS A MEDICALLY UNDERSERVED AREA SINCE 2005. WE PROVIDE A VARIETY OF CARE INCLUDING PRIMARY CARE IN TWO RURAL HEALTH CLINICS, INPATIENT CARE (INCLUDING ACUTE CARE), OBSERVATION, SWING BED AND INTERMEDIATE SWING BED SERVICES. IN ADDITION WE PROVIDE A VARIETY OF OUTPATIENT AND DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES AND HAVE GENERAL SURGERY PERFORMED ONSITE. WE PROVIDE 24/7 COVERAGE OF AN EMERGENCY ROOM THAT IS STAFFED WITH OUR OWN PROVIDERS. CHEYENNE COUNTY HOSPITALS THREE MOST EXPENSIVE ENTITIES IN 2013 INCLUDED OUR RURAL HEALTH CLINIC, EMERGENCY ROOM, AND ANESTHESIA. OUR SUCCESS BY WAY OF THESE CAPACITIES IS REFLECTED IN OUR PATIENT VOLUME HIGHLIGHTED BELOW. WE ARE PROUD TO OFFER SUCH EXTENSIVE SERVICES IN OUR COMMUNITY AND HAVE RECEIVED NUMEROUS PATIENTS RESIDING OUTSIDE THE COUNTY AS A DIRECT RESULT OF OUR STRONG REPUTATION IN THE REGION. RURAL HEALTH CLINIC: OUR RURAL HEALTH CLINIC IS DESIGNATED AS A SAFETY NET CLINIC BY THE STATE OF KANSAS. THE CLINIC SERVED 2,363 UNIQUE INDIVIDUALS IN 2013, FOCUSING ON ACTIVITIES CONCERNED WITH PREVENTION AND TREATMENT OF COMMON MEDICAL PROBLEMS IN AN OUTPATIENT SETTING. CARE IS DELIVERED BY PRIMARY CARE PRACTITIONERS TO INDIVIDUALS WHO PRESENT FOR SERVICE REGARDLESS OF THEIR ABILITY TO PAY. EXPENSE AND DISTANCE ARE TWO CHIEF BARRIERS TO CARE IN OUR COMMUNITY. THE CLINIC IS A CRITICAL SERVICE IN PROVIDING CARE FOR A POPULATION WITH FIXED INCOMES, SCARCE AND RELATIVELY LOW PAYING JOBS. IN 2013, OUR RURAL HEALTH CLINIC WAS AWARDED A PRIMARY CARE CLINIC GRANT OF $115,000 PLUS $6,450 FOR PRESCRIPTION DRUG ASSISTANCE. THIS CRITICAL FUNDING ASSISTED THE CLINIC IN PROVIDING ACCESS TO QUALITY, COMMUNITY-BASED HEALTH-CARE, REDUCING HEALTH DISPARITIES FOR OUR COMMUNITYS UNDERSERVED POPULATIONS, AND PROVIDING PRESCRIPTION DRUGS TO PATIENTS THAT COULD NOT OTHERWISE AFFORD MEDICATION. IN 2013, THE HOSPITAL WAS ABLE TO RECRUIT AN ADDITIONAL PA-C, DANA JEWELL-BROUGHAM AND OBTAINED COMMITMENTS FROM A MEDICAL DOCTOR CERTIFIED FOR OBSTETRICS (DR. MEGAN BROWN JOINED CCH THIS SUMMER) AND ANOTHER MEDICAL DOCTOR WHO WILL BE ARRIVING IN 2015. SUCCESSFUL PROVIDER RECRUITMENT HAS KEPT THE CLINIC AND HOSPITAL SETUP AS A STRONG AND RELIABLE PROVIDER OF HEALTH CARE FOR OUR COMMUNITY. EMERGENCY ROOM: OUR EMERGENCY ROOM SERVICES ARE OUR SECOND GREATEST EXPENSE. IT IS A CRITICAL SERVICE TO OUR FRONTIER RURAL COMMUNITY AND IS AVAILABLE TO ANY PATIENT WHO PRESENTS THEMSELVES REGARDLESS OF ABILITY TO PAY. THE TOTAL ER ENCOUNTERS IN 2013 WAS 578 VISITS. IN 2013, OUR ADMINISTRATOR AND NURSING STAFF WORKED DILIGENTLY TO EQUIP THE EMERGENCY ROOM AND TRAIN STAFF IN A MANNER THAT ACHIEVED LEVEL IV TRAUMA CENTER DESIGNATION IN FEBRUARY 2014. THERE ARE ONLY 22 HOSPITALS IN THE STATE OF KANSAS WITH THIS DESIGNATION AND CHEYENNE COUNTY HOSPITAL IS THE ONLY DESIGNATED LEVEL IV TRAUMA CENTER WEST OF HAYS. IN JANUARY OF 2013 OUR EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT BENEFITED FROM A NEW EKG MACHINE (GE MAC 5500, PREMIER EKG SYSTEM) WHICH DELIVERS ADVANCED DISEASE MANAGEMENT CAPABILITIES THROUGH ITS INDUSTRY-LEADING COLLECTION OF STANDARDS-SETTING ALGORITHMS AND ADVANCED NETWORKING AND FINALLY IN 2013, THE EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT BENEFITTED FROM THE INSTALLATION OF TWO DEDICATED COMPUTERS IN THE ER THAT TIED INTO THE NEW PHARMACY, MEDICATION ADMINISTRATION AND COMPUTERIZED PHYSICIAN ORDER ENTRY SYSTEM ALLOWING FOR INCREASED EFFICIENCIES AND ACCOUNTABILITY IN DRUG DISPENSING, THUS IMPROVING SAFETY FOR OUR PATIENTS. ANESTHESIA: CHEYENNE COUNTY HOSPITAL IS FORTUNATE TO HAVE A LOCAL CRNA. PROVIDING THIS SERVICE LOCALLY IS EXPENSIVE AS IT REQUIRES SPECIFIC DRUGS, EQUIPMENT, AND TRAINING OF PERSONNEL ALTHOUGH EXTREMELY BENEFICIAL. OUR HOSPITAL IS EQUIPPED AND READY FOR EMERGENCY AND ROUTINE SITUATIONS REQUIRING THIS SERVICE. CHIEFLY, THIS CAPACITY ALLOWS THE HOSPITAL TO PROVIDE PAIN CONTROL MORE QUICKLY AND PROVIDE ANESTHESIA FOR GENERAL SURGERIES PERFORMED AT THE FACILITY. IN 2013, OUR CRNA HAD 174 ENCOUNTERS AND ASSISTED IN 79 GENERAL SURGERIES, CARING FOR PATIENTS BEFORE, DURING AND AFTER MEDICAL PROCEDURES. AS WE LOOK TO THE END OF 2014 AND BEYOND, WE ARE EXTREMELY EXCITED TO BE REINTRODUCING OBSTETRICS TO OUR EXPANDED LIST OF SERVICES AND EXPECT OUR ANESTHETIST TO PLAY A VITAL ROLE IN THAT PROGRAMS SUCCESS.
