Explanation
FORM 990 - ORGANIZATION'S MISSION
TO PROMOTE INTER-CULTURAL APPRECIATION AND UNDERSTANDING THROUGH THE PRESENTATION OF GLOBAL MUSIC AND DANCE. THE CEDAR IS COMMITTED TO ARTISTIC EXCELLENCE AND INTEGRITY, DIVERSITY OF PROGRAMMING, SUPPORT FOR EMERGING ARTISTS AND COMMUNITY OUTREACH.
FORM 990, PAGE 2, PART III, LINE 4A
INCLUDING FEMI KUTI (NIGERIA), BAJOFONDO (ARGENTINA), FATOUMATA DIAWARA (MALI), CARAVAN PALACE (FRANCE), FENDIKA (ETHIOPIA), VSEN (SWEDEN), KARDEMIMMIT (FINLAND), DAKHABRAKA (UKRAINE), AND CHRISTINE SALEM (RUNION ISLAND). -WE HOSTED 336 LOCAL ARTISTS INCLUDING SOLD-OUT SHOWS WITH PERT NEAR SANDSTONE, CHARLIE PARR, LUCY MICHELLE, OKEE DOKEE BROTHERS, CHASTITY BROWN, AND THE PINES. -WE PRESENTED OUR FIFTH ANNUAL GLOBAL ROOTS FESTIVAL CONSISTING OF FREE PERFORMANCES, EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS, AND OFF-SITE EVENTS WITH ARTISTS FROM ALL OVER THE GLOBE. -WE RECEIVED OVER 100 APPLICATIONS FOR OUR THIRD ANNUAL 416 CLUB COMMISSIONS PROGRAM, DOUBLING THE NUMBER OF APPLICANTS FROM 2012. -WE FURTHERED OUR SOMALI COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT EFFORTS BY CURATING EVENTS FEATURING SOMALI ARTISTS, POETS, AND SPEAKERS, INCLUDING "STARS OF THE HORN OF AFRICA" IN MAY, "SOMALI WOMEN'S STORYTELLING CIRCLE" IN OCTOBER, "EMPOWERING WOMEN" IN NOVEMBER, AND "FAMILY REUNION" IN DECEMBER. -WE STRENGTHENED OUR SERVICES TO THE DISABILITY COMMUNITY THROUGH A PARTNERSHIP WITH WORKABILITIES, AN ORGANIZATION THAT SERVES ADULTS WITH DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES, BY PRESENTING FOUR MUSIC CONCERTS AT THEIR FACILITY. WE ALSO FORGED A NEW PARTNERSHIP WITH ALLY PEOPLE SOLUTIONS, AN ORGANIZATION SERVING PEOPLE WITH MENTAL HEALTH CONCERNS.
FORM 990, PAGE 2, PART III, LINE 4B
VARIETY OF CEDAR EVENTS IN 2013, INCLUDING AUDIENCE MEMBERS WHO HAD NEVER BEFORE BEEN TO THE CEDAR. SURVEYS, CASUAL CONVERSATIONS, AND FEEDBACK FROM PARTNERS INFORMED US THAT MANY OF THESE PARTICIPANTS HAD NEVER BEFORE EXPERIENCED A LIVE MUSIC EVENT OR EVEN A PERFORMING ARTS EVENT. WE HAVE WITNESSED CONSERVATIVE MUSLIM COMMUNITY MEMBERS INITIALLY HESITANT TO PARTICIPATE IN ARTS EVENTS BECOME ENCOURAGED BY FELLOW COMMUNITY MEMBERS, THOROUGHLY ENJOY THE MUSIC WE PUT ON OUR STAGE, AND COME BACK FOR SUBSEQUENT EVENTS. OUR EVENTS THAT SPECIFICALLY TARGET THE SOMALI COMMUNITY CONTINUE TO SEE GROWING AUDIENCE NUMBERS AS PEOPLE BECOME MORE AND MORE AWARE OF OUR PROGRAMS AND OUR SPACE. IN 2013, WE DEVELOPED OUR SOMALI COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT PROGRAMMING BY FORGING NEW PARTNERSHIPS WITH SOMALI ARTISTS. WE HOSTED EVENTS THAT SHOWCASED LOCAL SOMALI TALENT AND CONNECTED WITH SOMALI MUSIC PROMOTERS TO HELP US REACH SOMALI ARTISTS NATIONALLY AND INTERNATIONALLY. THESE CONNECTIONS OPEN THE POSSIBILITY FOR US TO PRESENT NEW SOMALI ARTISTS IN THE FUTURE, AND, IN TURN, BE EVEN MORE SUCCESSFUL IN APPEALING TO SOMALI AUDIENCE MEMBERS. FEEDBACK FROM COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS SUCH AS CEDAR RIVERSIDE YOUTH COUNCIL AND BRIAN COYLE CENTER INDICATE THAT THE CEDAR IS BUILDING A REPUTATION AS A "HUB" AND A "GO TO" FOR THE SOMALI COMMUNITY. AT LEAST FIVE NEW SOMALI INDIVIDUALS, GROUPS, AND ORGANIZATIONS HAVE APPROACHED US IN THE PAST THREE MONTHS WANTING TO COLLABORATE TO PRESENT AN EVENT IN OUR SPACE IN ORDER TO REACH AND SERVE THEIR COMMUNITY. AS WE CONTINUE WORKING WITH ORGANIZATIONS, LEADERS AND INDIVIDUALS IN THE SOMALI COMMUNITY, WE CONTINUE TO LEARN ABOUT BARRIERS TO ENGAGING THIS COMMUNITY WITH THE ARTS. TO ENGAGE SOMALI ELDERS, A GROUP WITH WHOM WE HAVEN'T BEFORE WORKED, WE HOSTED SEVERAL EVENTS SPECIFICALLY TARGETING SOMALI WOMEN, AND A SERIES OF STORYTELLING WORKSHOPS FOR ELDERS. WE PARTNERED WITH A LOCAL ADULT DAY CARE FACILITY TO ENGAGE THIS TARGET AUDIENCE OF ELDERLY SOMALI WOMEN. MANY OF THEM HAVE PHYSICAL LIMITATIONS AND CHALLENGES. TO ENSURE THEIR PARTICIPATION, WE PROVIDED DOOR-TO-DOOR TRANSPORTATION AND ONE-ON-ONE HELP TO EXIT AND ENTER THE VEHICLES AND PROGRAM SPACES AND TO ENSURE THEIR COMFORT. WE ALSO ADJUSTED START AND END TIMES FOR MANY EVENTS TO ACCOMMODATE THE SOMALI COMMUNITY'S CULTURE OF STAYING OUT LATE FOR SOCIAL EVENTS.
FORM 990, PAGE 2, PART III, LINE 4C
DEMONSTRATED BY THE FACT THAT ABOUT ONE THIRD OF ALL ARTISTS PERFORMING AT THE CEDAR ARE LOCALLY-BASED. THE 416 CLUB COMMISSIONS PROGRAM SUPPORTS AND FURTHERS THIS COMMITMENT. IN 2013, WE LAUNCHED OUR THIRD ANNUAL 416 CLUB PROGRAM. OUR 2013-14 PROGRAM IS PROVING TO BE OUR MOST SUCCESSFUL TO DATE AS MEASURED BY AUDIENCE NUMBERS, FEEDBACK, AND PRESS. WE RECEIVED OVER 100 APPLICATIONS FOR SEVEN COMMISSIONS, NEARLY DOUBLING THE NUMBER OF APPLICANTS FROM 2012-13. IN SEPTEMBER, WE HIRED A BOOKING ASSISTANT FOCUSED ON CULTIVATING AND SCHEDULING LOCAL AND SUPPORT ACTS.
FORM 990, PAGE 2, PART III, LINE 4D
THE CEDAR'S INDIGENOUS SERIES PRESENTS CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED ARTISTS FROM AROUND THE WORLD WHOSE WORK IS ROOTED IN THE MUSICAL TRADITIONS OF THEIR COUNTRIES AND CULTURES. THE PURPOSE OF THE SERIES IS TO ENGAGE YOUTH, ETHNIC AND IMMIGRANT COMMUNITIES, AND THE GENERAL PUBLIC WITH DIVERSE, QUALITY ART AND TO PROMOTE INTERCULTURAL APPRECIATION. INDIGENOUS MUSIC IS A SPECIFIC SUB-SET OF GLOBAL ROOTS MUSIC AND APPLIES TO WORK THAT IS PLACE-SPECIFIC AND DIRECTLY ATTRIBUTABLE TO A NATIVE POPULATION OF THAT PLACE. IN 2013, WE PRESENTED ACCLAIMED INDIGENOUS ARTISTS FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD INCLUDING ICE MUSIC, AN ACT FROM NORWAY PERFORMING TRADITIONAL NORDIC TUNES ON INSTRUMENTS MADE OF ICE, TERAKAFT, TUAREG GUITARISTS FROM THE SAHARA, AND FRIGG, TRADITIONAL FINNISH FIDDLERS. WE ALSO PRESENTED FENDIKA, TROUPE OF HIGHLY ACCOMPLISHED AZMARI MUSICIANS AND DANCERS FROM ADDIS ABABA, ETHIOPIA WHO PERFORM TRADITIONAL MUSIC AND DANCE ORIGINATING FROM ALL OF THE MAJOR TRIBES IN ETHIOPIA AND ACCLAIMED MALIAN SINGER-SONGWRITER ROKIA TRAOR WHO HAILS FROM THE BAMBARA ETHNIC GROUP.
