Identifier Return Reference Explanation
SchD_P01_S00_L01 Schedule D, Part I, Line 1 Donor advised funds comprise a significant portion of CJP's operations. Year to year changes in contributions received and grants made will cause CJP's contributions and programmatic expenditures to fluctuate. Comparative information follows: Fiscal 12, funds at year end 576; contributions $165,165,914; grants $49,046,896; fair value at 6-30-12 $345,613,000. Fiscal 13, funds at year end 629; contributions, $176,306,954; grants $52,700,011; fair value at 6-30-2013 $504,474,000.
SchD_P03_S00_L04 Schedule D, Part III, Line 4 CJP maintains the New England Holocaust Memorial, a public art installation next to Quincy Markets in Boston. The Memorial serves to educate the public about the holocaust, hosts guided visits by school children, and provides a public space for Boston area Jews to reflect on their heritage. It serves as a link to future generations and a commemoration of generations lost during World War II, fulfilling CJP's mandate to inspire the next generation to embrace Jewish life and learning.
SchD_P04_S00_L02b Schedule D, Part IV, Line 2b CJP allows small Jewish nonprofits in the Boston area to be co-investors in the Jewish Community Endowment Pool. There is a written agreement that confirms that the ownership of the assets is retained by the co-investors. CJP's other funds managed for others consist of charitable remainder trusts which provide a life income to donors and which provide a remainder interest to CJP or other Jewish charities at trust termination, pooled disabilities trusts where the ownership of the assets are determined by the trust documents, and funds belonging to synagogues who participate in the Passport to Israel program which specifies that the funds will be returned to or disbursed on behalf of the synagogues to promote connection to Israel by the next generation.
SchD_P05_S00_L04 Schedule D, Part V, Line 4 CJP's endowment funds support varied programs in the Jewish community of greater Boston, including Jewish education, housing for disabled persons and employment. They also protect CJP's long-term ability to provide such services into the future.
SchD_P10_S00_L02 Schedule D, Part X, Line 2 CJP is recognized as an organization exempt from income tax under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. However certain activities of exempt organizations, to the extent profitable may be subject to Federal and state taxation as unrelated business income. No provision for income taxes has been made in these financial statements as management has identified no tax liability. CJP recognizes the financial statement impact of a tax position only after determining that the relevant tax authority would have a greater than 50 percent likelihood of sustaining the position following an audit. CJP's most significant position related to taxes is its charitable status and the resulting exemption from income taxes. CJP has applied this more-likely-than-not threshold to all tax positions for the which the statute of limitations is open and determined that there were no material uncertain tax positions as of June 30, 2013 and 2012. It is CJP's policy to record estimated interest and penalties (if any) as part of management and general expense. Management believes that CJP's income tax returns for fiscal years 2009 and prior are no longer subject to examination by taxing authorities.
SchD_P11_S00_L02d Schedule D, Part XI, Line 2d Supporting organization revenues $590,482 included in the consolidated audit are excluded from the 990 as they are reported separately. Revenue is reduced by event expenses (446,936)and rental expenses (684,771) that are netted against revenue on the 990. In addition the portion of realized gains on sales of securities that are owned by JCEP partners is deducted (9,709,476).
SchD_P11_S00_L04b Schedule D, Part XI, Line 4b The partnership expenses that flowed through related to JCEP partners is added back, increasing investment income by $738,051.
SchD_P12_S00_L02d Schedule D, Part XII, Line 2d The exclusion of expenses related to Supporting Organizations (320,367), rental expenses (684,771) and event expenses (446,936) that are netted against revenue reduce the expenses reported on the 990.

SchF_P01_S00_L02 Schedule F, Part I, Line 2 Generally, CJP makes grants to US charities and does not require extensive reporting on the use of the funds, as those organizations file separate informational returns (Form 990). Where grants are sent directly overseas (less than 1% of all grants), CJP ensures that grant recipients are registered charities in their country of origin or obtains fiscal and programmatic reports to confirm that funds donated were expended for their charitable purposes.

F990_P06_S0B_L11b Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11b The 990 is prepared by management, reviewed by CJP's audit firm and then reviewed by the Audit Committee, a standing committee of the Board of Directors. Prior to filing the 990 , except for schedule B, is provided to all of the Board members and is presented for questions and comment at a regularly scheduled meeting of the Board of Directors. In recognition of the Jewish tradition of anonymous philanthropy and out of respect for the confidential nature of the philanthropy of our donors, CJP's Board of Directors has voted to delegate the responsibility for review of Schedule B to the Chair of the Board. The Chair of the Board reviewed the Schedule B at the May 7, 2014 meeting of the Board prior to the filing of the return.
F990_P06_S0B_L12c Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12c Annually questionnaires are sent to the Board of Directors, officers and key employees. The responses are returned to the CFO and are reviewed to identify if any respondent knows of a potential conflict of interest or of a family member at a firm with which CJP does business. Any such conflicts are reported to the Chair of the Board. All transactions with firms associated with board members are made at arms length and at terms that are normal and customary for the industry. No transactions met the threshold for disclosure on schedule L.
F990_P06_S0B_L15 Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15 CJP has a board committee on Organizational Development. Comprised of board members, this committee reviews the compensation of all key personnel. Comparative salary information is obtained from multiple sources, including the Jewish Federations of North America, an umbrella organization that aggregates information from many federations nationally. This review is done annually. Minutes of the Organizational Development committee are recorded contemporaneously.
F990_P06_S0C_L19 Form 990, Part VI, Section C, Line 19 CJP's organizing documents are available online through the website of the Secretary of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The audited financial statements, 990 and 990-T are posted on CJP's website. The 990 is also available online through Guidestar.org.
F990_P07_S0A_L01a Form 990, Part VII, Section A, Line 1a CJP's directors serve a term that begins September 1st. The following directors noted with an asterisk (*) ended their terms August 31, 2012: *Edward J Bayone, *Robert L Beal, *Bill Gabovitch, *Jill B Goldenberg, *Deborah S Horwitz.
