Explanation
Form 990, Part I, Line 1
Half marathon, 5K run and the kids run in honor of the 161 victims of the May 22, 2011 tornado, in Joplin, MO. Proceeds of the event will allow us to support other 501 (c) (3) organizations, and to create other active lifestyle events in the future. Our second year allowed us to create the banners as planned and to contribute over $20,000 to other location charities. The banners are stored properly to maintain quality and condition so they may be displayed year after year. The banners were extremely well received by the public and will be even more focused on in the future.
Form 990, Part III, Line 1
Proceeds of our 2013 event allowed us to support other 501 (c) (3) organizations with over $20,000. Our goal to produce the 161 banners in honor of the tornado victims was a great success.
Form 990, Part III, Line 4d
This item breaks down as follows, $17,693 for banners; $8,108 speaker for expo and banquet; $6,000 for contract for race director; general organizational expenses include insurance, fees, etc. of $4.015
Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11b
The form 990 was completed by Treasurer based on using prior year 990 (which was prepared by a CPA) and the 2012 990, as prepared by the CPA was REVIEWED for 2012. ALE Inc. is contracted with the CPA firm to do a REVIEW every-other year, covering a two year period each time. A copy of the 2013, 990 is mailed to each of the 5 board members for their review and comments. They are given a couple of days to ask questions and send their approval. Once approved, the 990 can be sent to the IRS.
Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12c
At each board meeting, all board members are well educated on what constitutes a conflict of interest. Any conflict of interest is to be noted in our minutes. The board does not have a great deal of decisions to make that deal with the day to day operations of the organization, but instead more of the overall policies and larger financial items such as donations to be made from proceeds. None of the board members receive any compensation for their services to the organization as a director or board members.
Form 990, Part VI, Section C, Line 19
As treasurer for the organization, my day job is with the Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce. Records for the organization are available for inspection at that office. To date there have been no requests.
Form 990, Part IX, Line 11g
Speaker Fee for the main event.
Form 990, Part XI, Line 9
effect of rounding off to the nearest $$ throughout.
Form 990, Part XII, Line 2a
2012 financial statements were reviewed by an independent accountant (CPA). 2013 was not. Policy is that a review is to be done every-other year and for a period of 2 years each time. This policy results in a significant cost savings. Treasurer/bookkeeper has 40 years of accounting experience and another board member is a financial planner for Edward Jones. A third board member is a local business owner, so internally financial are reviewed each year as well as reviewing the tax return prior to sending to the IRS>
