ON NOVEMBER 12, 2013, THE MEMBERS OF THE PIONEER AND HISTORICAL SOCIETY APPROVED CHANGES TO THE ORGANIZATION'S BYLAWS TO TAKE EFFECT JANUARY 01, 2014. THE PURPOSE OF THE SOCIETY HAS NOT CHANGED BUT SOME TERMINOLOGY AND PRACTICES HAVE CHANGED TO CONFORM TO MODERN MUSEUM STANDARDS. FOR EXAMPLE, REFERENCES TO MEETING NOTIFICATIONS BY TELEGRAPH WERE DROPPED AND NOTIFICATION BY INTERNET WAS ADDED, THE NAMES OF SOME COMMITTEES WERE CHANGED SUCH AS HOUSE AND GROUNDS COMMITTEE WAS CHANGED TO BUILDINGS AND GROUNDS, A NON-DISCRIMINATION POLICY WAS ADDED, AN ANNUAL MEETING OF MEMBERS WAS DROPPED IN FAVOR OF AN ANNUAL REPORT OF ACTIVITIES TO BE MADE AVAILABLE TO MEMBERS, AND THE VOLUNTEER POSITION OF CURATOR WAS ADDED. THE MOST SIGNIFICANT CHANGE WAS A COMPLETE RESTATING OF THE SOCIETY'S PURPOSE TO REFLECT A BROADER UNDERSTANDING OF THE ROLE HISTORICAL SOCIETIES PLAY IN PRESERVING A COMMUNITY'S HISTORY. THE NEW PURPOSE STATEMENT READS, "THE PIONEER AND HISTORICAL SOCIETY OF MUSKINGUM COUNTY BELIEVES THAT AN UNDERSTANDING AND APPRECIATION OF OUR HISTORIC HERITAGE IS ESSENTIAL TO MAINTAINING A UNIQUE AND MEANINGFUL IDENTITY AS A COMMUNITY. THE MISSION OF THE SOCIETY IS TO CELEBRATE AND PRESERVE THE HISTORY OF MUSKINGUM COUNTY AND ITS PEOPLE AND TO ASSURE THAT THIS LEGACY IS PASSED ON TO FUTURE GENERATIONS. TOWARD THIS END WE WILL: EDUCATE AND ENGAGE A DIVERSE PUBLIC THROUGH A VARIETY OF PROGRAMS; MAINTAIN OUR MUSEUM BUILDINGS AND COLLECTIONS; SUPPORT RESEARCH; PUBLISH HISTORICAL DOCUMENTS; AND MANAGE THE SOCIETY OPENLY, ETHICALLY AND PROFESSIONALLY."
