The award is a $1,000 cash award per awardee, payable directly to the institution. Criteria and procedures are specified on the application. The South County High School PTSO is pleased to offer achievement-based scholarships to well-rounded graduating seniors pursuing full-time higher education at a two- or four-year college or university or technical/vocational institute. Award amounts will be $1,000 each. All applications are reviewed anonymously by an impartial selection committee and are evaluated on the following criteria: academic and other achievement, extra-curricular activities, letter of recommendation, essay submission, community involvement, leadership, and overall quality of application. ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS: Applicant must be a senior at South County High School graduating in June of the current academic year. Minimum weighted GPA of 3.0. Student and/or student's parent/guardian must be a paid member of the South County High School PTSO as of December 31, 2013. To verify membership status, contact the Membership Chairperson: Julie Gorski at socoptso@gmail.com. Applicant must be accepted by a college or post-secondary institution at the time the scholarship is paid. No preference will be given to applicants based on race, religion, nationality, gender, physical handicap, economic background, or length of time enrolled at South County High School. APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS: Fully completed scholarship application must be typed and signed. Personally written essay on the topic provided. All essays must be typed, double spaced in 12 pt. Times New Roman font, on standard-sized white paper. Essays should not exceed 300 words and should NOT include your name or other identifiers. Content and grammar will both be a consideration in determining award recipients. One letter of recommendation in a sealed and signed envelope (over the envelope flap). Copy of 7-semester unofficial transcript listing all high school credits and grades through the first semester of senior year. Fully completed applications and all related documents are due and must be postmarked by April 25, 2014. Mail applications to: Jennifer MacDonald, ATTN: PTSO Scholarship, 8507 Oak Pointe Way, Fairfax Station, VA 22039. Or you may hand-deliver the application to the scholarship administrator at the same address by 5:00pm on April 25, 2014. Do not deliver applications to school. Incomplete or late submissions will NOT be considered. DISBURSEMENT OF AWARDS: Applicants will be notified of the decision in writing on or before May 31, 2014. Scholarship winners will be announced at the Senior Awards Ceremony. Payment of scholarship awards will be made directly to the related academic institution and shall be applied to tuition and/or associated costs and fees. Scholarship awards will be submitted upon receipt of a copy of the school's statement showing acceptance in an accredited institution. The student must provide the scholarship chairperson with this verification along with the name and address of the institution by June 13, 2014. Scholarship winners who accept a full scholarship (to include tuition, room and board) from another source, or who receive an appointment to a military academy, must forfeit this scholarship and notify the SCHS PTSO scholarship administrator in writing of that decision as soon as possible but no later than May 31, 2014. The committee grades each application for academic achievement, extra-curricular activities, community involvement, leadership, honors/awards earned, work/internships, essay, and overall quality of application. Each category is given equal weight in grading. All applications are graded anonymously. Committee members: Lisa Packer, Robin Myers, Andrea Cochrane Tracey, Melissa Shaffer, and Diane Malone. The scholarship administrator selects and replaces committee members as needed. No senior parent of a SCHS student serves and no SCHS faculty/staff who would potentially be familiar with candidates serve on the committee. Goal of committee selection is to offer diversity and balance to the grading process so the following is taken into consideration - members with current or former teaching experience, minority parent, male/female representation, community leader/representative, adults with familiarity to SCHS, etc.
