Form 990-EZ, Part V Information regarding Personal Benefit Contracts: The organization did not, during the year,receive any funds, directly or indirectly, to pay premiums on a personal benefit contract. The organization did not, during the year, pay any premiums, directly or indirectly, on a personal benefit contract.
Request for abatement of penalties based on reasonable cause I, Eliot Heller, President of the Nu Sigma Chapter of the Alpha Epsilon Pi Fraternity, make this statement under penalties of perjury. We hereby request abatement of any penalties that may be assessed for late filing of our 2013 Form 990-EZ Short Form Return of Organization Exempt From Income Tax. Though our accountant filed an automatic three month extension extending the due date from May 15, 2014 to August 15, 2014, an additional extension was not filed, and unfortunately the return was not able to be completed by that date. Our accountant required some additional documentation that was in possession of a past officer, and it took longer than expected to track that information down. Fortunately, the documentation was located and the return has been prepared completely and accurately. Though our organization was not neglectful or careless, we recognize that keeping documents stored in a way that provides continuity upon changing officers is required, and we have implemented new systems to make sure this does not happen in the future. The organization is a 100% volunteer college fraternity and the late filing penalty would present a significant burden given our limited budget. The organization operated in good faith, and we believe the facts and circumstances outlined above support an abatement of the penalty especially given that steps have been taken to ensure that all future filings will be timely.
