What is the organization's primary exempt purpose? The Honolulu Sertoma Club is organized exclusively for charitable and educational purposes, including, for such purposes, the making of distributions to organizations that qualify as exempt organizations under section 501 (c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code, or corresponding section of any future federal tax code. The Honolulu Sertoma Club serves the community directly and through the George B. Carter Serteens Club of Hawaii, a trade name of the Honolulu Sertoma Club. The Honolulu Sertoma Club performs charitable community service projects, including but not limited to, hearing safety and hearing health projects as part of Sertoma International's hearing charity mission. The Honolulu Sertoma Club provides leadership training and mentorship to Hawaii's Gifted and Talented Youth.
Describe the organization’s program service accomplishments for each of its three largest program services, as measured by expenses. In a clear and concise manner, describe the services provided, the number of persons benefited, and other relevant information for each program title.
28 The Honolulu Sertoma Club (the name of the organization is a composite of SERvice TO Mankind) was established to continue the Serteen (SERvice TEEN) program and bring Sertoma back to Hawaii. The core members are Serteen alumni and people associated with the Serteen program. The George B. Carter Serteens Club of Hawaii consists of gifted and talented students from public and private middle and high schools on Oahu who test in the top 2% on a nationally recognized achievement test. The George B. Carter Serteens Club of Hawaii provides social interaction and leadership training for gifted and talented students who wish to serve the community. Guided by the Honolulu Sertoma Club, the Serteens Club of Hawaii continues to emphasize leadership, peer association and community service. The Honolulu Sertoma Club offers life-long community service opportunities to its student and adult members. Every year, the Serteens youth group develops and executes several community service projects, in addition to the Honolulu Sertoma Club's community service mission of providing leadership development training and mentorship to the gifted and talented youth comprising Serteens. In the 2013-2014 academic year, the Serteens held monthly leadership development meetings, three fundraisers to fund operations and numerous charitable service projects to benefit the community. In addition to the youth-developed community service projects, the Honolulu Sertoma Club hosts two educational enrichment camps. The first is in July, which is our Leadership Camp, and the second is in February, which is our Knights Motivational Camp. In July 2013, the Honolulu Sertoma Club sponsored a leadership camp for Hawaii gifted and talented student members of the George B. Carter Serteens Club of Hawaii. The camp is appropriately called "Leadership Camp" and focuses on supporting the Serteen mission of social interaction by: Providing positive peer association; and providing the opportunity for youths in grades 7-12 to expand their leadership skills and knowledge. Leadership Camp focused on supporting the Serteen mission of leadership training by developing the following leadership competencies: Communications skills Serp - Serteen officers are required to communicate effectively through the Serp, the monthly club newsletter, information about the camp. Phone Trees - The Serteen officers and committee members are required to effectively use phone trees to communicate information and gather information. Emails - The Serteen officers and committee members are required to effectively use emails to communicate information and gather information. Website - The Serteen officers and committee members are required to effectively use the website to communicate with the club. Analytical skills Decision-making - Serteen officers are required to assess situations and make the appropriate decisions. Strategic thinking skills Annual planning - Officers are require to plan out activities for the whole year. The Serteens are required to convert their ideas into plans and to identify resources required. Fundraising - The resources required identified in planning is converted into a target budget for the club and the club organizes a fundraiser to fund their operational budget for the year. Camp planning - Initial planning for the Knights Motivational Camp occurs in the first two officer meetings. It goes into high gear in July after the Leadership Camp. Plan books - Those Serteens who choose to start their plan books develop strategic planning skills. The plan book requires Serteens to identify goals and objectives that are to be achieved. Planning skills Camp planning - The officers and committee members are all involved in developing their planning skills as they plan out their portions of the camp. Objectives - The planning all starts out with identifying objectives and then planning their activities to meet those objectives. Activity Worksheets -The Serteens plan their activities using an "Activity Worksheet" which serves as a checklist for them. Complexity - In general, the members are taught to keep things simple. However, some plans, like the camps get into levels of complexity that require assistance from the advisors. Problem solving skills Address problems that come up. They are required to manage the various crises. Self and other development skills Plan book - We want the Serteens to develop a plan book and use it as their road map to success. Continuous learning - Seminars at KMC use the theme chosen by the Serteen VP of Leadership Development and focus on the 5+1+1 areas we emphasize throughout the year and in the plan books: Physical, Social, Spiritual, Financial, Educational/Professional, Personal and Community. The Honolulu Sertoma Club awarded $10,000 in scholarships to seven graduating high school seniors going to college through a program administered by Honolulu Sertoma. The grant money came from a charitable contribution from the Cottington Trust. In February, the Honolulu Sertoma Club took 25 Serteens to Kilauea Military Camp, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park for their annual Knights Motivational Camp. The Honolulu Sertoma Club sponsors this annual trip. The Sertomans provided program support, seminars and mentoring for the Serteens. The plan book is an effort to get Serteens to write down their goals. This serves to help the Serteen refine their goals and allows the Sertomans and others to mentor the Serteens. The plan book areas we have chosen are physical, social, spiritual, financial, educational/professional, personal, and community. The objective is to get Serteens to think about how they can contribute to their community - no matter where they end up. Many Serteen Alumni continue to contribute to their communities in various ways. Several seminars were presented by Honolulu Sertoma Club members. Sertomans also made themselves available for individual discussions and mentoring. Seminars included financial decision-making; ; developing personal mission statements, personal values, and goals; physical goal setting - the Mauna Kea climb; public speaking; long term goal setting; and dealing with obstacles. The camp normally includes two planned hikes - one along the Kilauea Crater Rim and the other up Mauna Kea. The Mauna Kea hike was successful. The Honolulu Sertoma Club produced and printed 2000 Safe Ears hearing safety brochures to distribute to local schools for young people to protect their hearing health. This community service project was in support of Sertoma International's hearing health mission. In addition to this, Sertoma members provide charitable contributions to support Sertoma's hearing health mission. In April, the Honolulu Sertoma Club sponsored its annual appreciation banquet for the Serteens youth group. This awards banquet highlighted the numerous community service projects and leadership development activities that the Serteens participated in and recognized the outgoing seniors graduating from our educational enrichment program. Outgoing student leaders were recognized for their contributions and the newly elected student leaders were inducted in their terms of office. The newly elected Serteen officers attended leadership training seminars and workshops sponsored by Honolulu Sertoma members in May. They developed and planned upcoming community service projects, special event fundraisers and social projects for the 2014-2015 academic year.
