VOLUNTEERS PROVIDE THEIR SERVICES AS MENTORS, ADULT SUPERVISION, AND INSTRUCTORS.

PROBLEM BEHAVIORS, ENHANCING LEADERSHIP AND MEDIA SKILLS, AND INCREASING THE LIKELIHOOD THAT THE PARTICIPANTS WILL GRADUATE FROM HIGH SCHOOL AND ENROLL IN POST-SECONDARY EDUCATION. SAFE CITY ACADEMY (SCA) ENROLLS GANG AND COURT INVOLVED YOUTH, AGES 16 TO 19, IN A GED PREPARATION/WORK PROGRAM. SCA SERVES APPROXIMATELY 50 HIGH- RISK, DISCONNECTED YOUTH EACH YEAR. DYC LAUNCHED SAFE CITY ACADEMY TO ADDRESS THE LACK OF REMEDIAL EDUCATION AND GED PROGRAMS FOR YOUTH WHO HAVE CRIMINAL RECORDS AND HAVE DROPPED OUT OF PUBLIC SCHOOLS. THIS COMBINATION OF RISK FACTORS OFTEN CREATES A BARRIER TO TRADITIONAL GED PROGRAMS THAT FAIL TO MEET THEIR IMMEDIATE, BASIC NEED FOR WAGES AND JOB PREPARATION THAT COULD HELP THEM ESCAPE GANG AND DRUG ACTIVITY. PARTICIPANTS ARE PROVIDED WITH GED PREPARATION, WORK READINESS AND MENTORING SERVICES FOR WHICH THEY ARE PROVIDED A SMALL STIPEND. GIRLS AND BOYS BASKETBALL PROGRAMS RUN THROUGHOUT THE SCHOOL YEAR AND THE SUMMER. DURING THE SUMMER DYC ALSO RUNS BASKETBALL AND SOCCER LEAGUES AT LOCAL PARKS IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE CITY OF BOSTON. IN THE FALL DYC ORGANIZES THE BEAN TOWN SLAM, A BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT THAT INCLUDES TEAMS FROM CITIES AND TOWNS ACROSS EASTERN MASSACHUSETTS AND RUNS FOR TEN WEEKS. APPROXIMATELY 1400 YOUTH PARTICIPATE IN THE BASKETBALL PROGRAMS. PERFORMING AND MEDIA ARTS ACTIVITIES RANGE FROM READING AND CREATIVE WRITING TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF FEATURE- LENGTH MOVIES AND SCREENPLAYS. DYC HAS A STRONG PERFORMING ARTS PROGRAM WITH ACTING AND ALTERNATIVE CASTING FOR A LOCAL FILM PRODUCTION COMPANY. STAFF AND VOLUNTEERS PROVIDE AUDITION COACHING, TRANSPORTATION, AND GUARDIANSHIP FOR YOUTH WHO ACT IN COMMERCIALS, TELEVISION, AND OTHER MEDIA PRODUCTIONS. IN ADDITION TO VISUAL ARTS, MEDIA, ACTING, AND DANCE PROGRAMS AT THE TEEN CENTER, DYC ALSO ORGANIZES ARTS PERFORMANCES AND PRESENTATIONS IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD AND SITES THROUGHOUT THE REGION. DEMOCRACY CLUB LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROVIDES 50 YOUTH WITH TRAINING IN LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT, ORGANIZING, PUBLIC SPEAKING, AND ADVOCACY. YOUTH ORGANIZE FORUMS AND PUBLIC EVENTS, MEET WITH ELECTED OFFICIALS, AND PERFORM COMMUNITY SERVICE. THE TEEN SPEAKERS BUREAU CREATES PRINT AND ELECTRONIC MEDIA COMMUNICATION AND PRESENTATIONS FOR HEALTH AND SAFETY EVENTS IN THE COMMUNITY. STAFF AND YOUTH ALSO ORGANIZE MONTHLY WORKSHOPS ON HEALTH ISSUES AND DISCUSSION GROUPS THAT PROMOTE HEALTHY BEHAVIOR AND RESISTANCE TO NEGATIVE PEER PRESSURE AT THE CENTER THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. ON THE JOB ENGAGES TEENS AND ASSISTS THEM WITH BASIC NEEDS BY OFFERING JOB OPPORTUNITIES AND INCOME. DYC HAS YOUTH STAFF POSITIONS: TUTORING, PERFORMANCE ART INSTRUCTION AND PUBLIC PRESENTATIONS, AND ON-GOING DAY JOBS SUCH AS RUNNING ERRANDS AND CLEANING IN AND AROUND THE CENTER. STAFF ALSO PROVIDES JOB REFERRAL AND SUPPORT SERVICES INCLUDING COUNSELING, TRANSPORTATION, AND WORK CLOTHING.
