FORM 990 - ORGANIZATION'S MISSION
THE REFUGEE AND IMMIGRANT CENTER AT THE ASIAN ASSOCIATION OF UTAH (RIC-AAU) WAS FOUNDED IN 1977 AND IS A PRIVATE, NON-PROFIT, COMMUNITY-BASED ORGANIZATION LOCATED IN SALT LAKE CITY. ORIGINALLY ESTABLISHED TO SUPPORT ASIAN IMMIGRANTS AND REFUGEES IN THEIR TRANSITION TO LIFE IN THE UNITED STATES, THE ORGANIZATION HAS EXPANDED ITS RESOURCES AND SERVICES OVER THE PAST 37 YEARS TO ASSIST REFUGEES AND IMMIGRANTS FROM AROUND THE WORLD. TODAY, WE SERVE OVER 2,000 REFUGEES, IMMIGRANTS, AND OTHER COMMUNITY MEMBERS EACH YEAR. WITH OVER 60 STAFF MEMBERS, OUR BACKGROUNDS COVER 17 COUNTRIES AND OVER 30 LANGUAGES. WE ARE DEVOTED TO HELPING CLIENTS BECOME MORE SELF-SUFFICIENT IN THEIR DAILY LIVES, AND AIM TO REDUCE THE BARRIERS THAT REFUGEES AND IMMIGRANTS FACE WHEN ADAPTING TO LIFE IN THE U.S. WITH THE HELP OF STAFF, VOLUNTEERS, AND COMMUNITY LEADERS, WE ARE CONTINUALLY DEVELOPING AND EXPANDING OUR SERVICES TO MEET THE NEEDS OF OUR CLIENTS. WE OFFER COMPREHENSIVE SERVICES IN ONE PHYSICAL LOCATION, REDUCING TRANSPORTATION BARRIERS AND PROMOTING ACCESS TO A WIDE RANGE OF RESOURCES. INDIVIDUALS AND FAMILIES IN NEED CAN GET CASE MANAGEMENT SERVICES, EMPLOYMENT HELP, COUNSELING AND MENTAL HEALTH TREATMENT, ENGLISH CLASSES, AFTER-SCHOOL TUTORING AND MORE. WE ALSO WORK CLOSELY WITH THE UTAH RESETTLEMENT AGENCIES, REFUGEE COMMUNITIES, STATE PROTECTIVE SERVICES, AND MANY OTHERS, TO ENSURE A GREATER NETWORK OF SUPPORT FOR OUR CLIENTS. RIC-AAU IS COMMITTED TO WALKING WITH PEOPLE ON THEIR JOURNEYS TO SELF- SUFFICIENCY. AS WE LOOK INTO OUR FUTURE, WE ARE DEDICATED TO ASSISTING REFUGEES AND IMMIGRANTS IN BETTERING THEIR LIVES, AND WILL CONTINUE TO HOLD THE DOOR OF OPPORTUNITY OPEN. OUR PRIORITY IS ALWAYS DIRECT IMPACT ON THOSE WE SERVE. WE ARE COMMITTED TO RESPONSIBILITY AND TRANSPARENCY WITH OUR FUNDING. EMPLOYMENT AND SOCIAL SERVICES OUR TEAM OF JOB DEVELOPERS AND REFUGEE COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS HAD A SUCCESSFUL YEAR OF SUPPORTING REFUGEES THROUGH JOB COACHING, TRAINING ON RESUMES AND APPLICATIONS, AND BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS WITH EMPLOYERS. OUR TEAM SAW JOB GROWTH OF 8% FROM THE PREVIOUS YEAR, TWICE AS MUCH AS THE GENERAL UTAH JOB MARKET. THROUGH THE INTENSIVE CASE MANAGEMENT SUPPORT AVAILABLE IN SOCIAL SERVICES, OUR CASE MANAGEMENT TEAM SERVED 1,181 REFUGEES FROM 20 COUNTRIES. CASE MANAGERS SUPPORT RECENTLY ARRIVED REFUGEES WITH HELP NAVIGATING HOUSING, EDUCATION, HEALTH, MENTAL HEALTH, AND OTHER SYSTEMS.

ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE OUR ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE PROGRAM SERVES 150 REFUGEES AND IMMIGRANTS WITH CRITICAL LANGUAGE CLASSES, AND WITH MEASURABLE SUCCESS- RIC-AAU'S ESL STUDENTS AVERAGED A 268% INCREASE IN ENGLISH PROFICIENCY, PLACING THE PROGRAM FOR PROFICIENCY INCREASES. YOUTH AND FAMILY THIS YEAR WE HELPED 88 YOUTH THROUGH ACADEMIC ASSISTANCE AND SOCIAL SKILLS BUILDING. WE ALSO PROVIDED EVIDENCE-BASED PARENTING CLASSES, DARE TO BE YOU AND PARENTING WISELY, TO 60 PARENTS FROM SOMALI, PACIFIC ISLANDER, AND SPANISH-SPEAKING COMMUNITIES. TRAFFICKING RIC-AAU SERVED 32 VICTIMS OF TRAFFICKING AND FAMILY MEMBERS OF VICTIMS THIS YEAR. THROUGH A PARTNERSHIP WITH USCRI, WE PROVIDE CASE MANAGEMENT, FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE, AND REFERRALS TO THESE VICTIMS AND THEIR FAMILIES. SUNNYVALE NEIGHBORHOOD CENTER IN AUGUST 2012 WE OPENED THE DOORS TO THE SUNNYVALE NEIGHBORHOOD CENTER IN MURRAY, UT AT THE SUNNYVALE APARTMENT COMPLEX. IN AN AREA WITH A MANY REFUGEE AND IMMIGRANT FAMILIES, THE CENTER HAS SERVED OVER 200 NEIGHBORHOOD RESIDENTS WITH ESL, AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAMS, CITIZENSHIP CLASSES, PARENTING CLASSES, HEALTH WORKSHOPS, AND WALK-IN SERVICES. WE HAVE PARTNERED WITH OVER 20 GROUPS, AGENCIES AND ORGANIZATIONS.

ONE THING THE ORGANIZATION DOES TO AVOID CONFLICTS OF INTEREST IS TO BID OUT CONTRACTS.
