PROGRAM SERVICE ACCOMPLISHMENTS ST. JAMES HEALTHCARE'S PRIMARY MARKET AREA HAS AN EXTREMELY HIGH RATE OF DIABETES AMONG BOTH ITS YOUNG AND OLDER POPULATION. THROUGH A THREE-YEAR GRANT, ST. JAMES DEVELOPED A STRONG COMMUNITY DIABETES PROGRAM THAT PROVIDES A CONTINUUM OF CARE FOR DIABETIC PATIENTS IN SOUTHWEST MONTANA. WHEN THAT FUNDING ENDED, ST. JAMES DECIDED TO CONTINUE THE PROGRAM BECAUSE IT IS SO IMPORTANT FOR THE COMMUNITY. IN 2012, THROUGH ANOTHER GRANT, ST. JAMES BEGAN PROVIDING A 16-WEEK PROGRAM FOR PEOPLE AT RISK OF DEVELOPING DIABETES. THE PROGRAM EDUCATES PARTICIPANTS ABOUT LIFE STYLE CHANGES THEY CAN MAKE TO ENSURE THEY DO NOT GET DIABETES. IN 2012, ST. JAMES BEGAN OFFERING FREE VASCULAR SCREENINGS WHICH INCLUDED AN ULTRASOUND EXAM. THE PURPOSE WAS TO IDENTIFY THOSE PEOPLE AT RISK FOR VASCULAR DISEASES. THIS TYPE OF SCREENING IS TYPICALLY NOT DONE UNLESS A SPECIFIC PROBLEM WARRANTS FURTHER TESTING. THESE SCREENINGS WERE OFFERED IN APRIL AND AGAIN IN NOVEMBER. IN FEBRUARY TO CELEBRATE NATIONAL HEART HEALTH AWARENESS, WE OFFERED A FREE HEALTH FAIR SESSION THAT INCLUDED EDUCATION ABOUT HEART DISEASE AND STROKES AND FREE SCREENINGS FOR BODY MASS, GLUCOSE, BLOOD PRESSURE. ADDITIONALLY CHOLESTOROL SCREENINGS WERE PERFORMED AT A SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCED COST. IN ADDITION TO THE PROVISION OF HEALTH CARE FOR THE POOR AND UNINSURED (CHARITY CARE) AND THE UNPAID COST OF MEDICAID, ST. JAMES HEALTHCARE ALSO SUPPORTED, THROUGH MONETARY OR IN-KIND DONATIONS, A NUMBER OF OTHER COMMUNITY-ENHANCING ACTIVITIES. SOME OF THE OTHER ACTIVITIES INCLUDED TRANSPORTATION SERVICES BOTH AMBULANCE TRANSPORT AND TAXI OR BUS SERVICES FOR THE POOR OR UNINSURED; A MENTAL HEALTH CRISIS RESPONSE LINE; PRESCRIPTION DRUG ASSISTANCE FOR THE POOR OR UNINSURED; AND MORE THAN 12,000 MEALS FOR INDIGENT PEOPLE. ST. JAMES ALSO PROVIDES ATHLETIC TRAINERS TO ALL OF THE 6 SOUTHWEST MONTANA HIGH SCHOOLS AND A LOCAL COLLEGE. EACH SCHOOL PAYS A SMALL FEE FOR THE SERVICES AND ST. JAMES PICKS UP THE REMAINING COST. ST. JAMES ALSO PROVIDES $5 SPORTS PHYSICIALS FOR THE TWO LOCAL HIGH SCHOOLS AND THE COLLEGE. THROUGHOUT THE YEAR, ST. JAMES HOSTS PUBLIC TALKS ON A VARIETY OF HEALTH ISSUES AND ALSO PROVIDES PRECEPTOR TRAINING FOR STUDENTS MAJORING IN NURSING, PHYSICAL AND RESPIRATORY THERAPY, PHARMACY, SURGICAL SERVICES, LAB ETC.
