MUSEUM AMBASSADORS VISIT CLASSROOMS ACROSS SAN FRANCISCO AND LEAD TOURS THROUGH THE MUSEUMS, PROVIDING A FRESH AND INTERACTIVE APPROACH TO LEARNING ABOUT ART. THIS PAST YEAR, THE AMBASSADORS FOCUSED ON THE WORK OF RICHARD DIEBENKORN AND ON ANCIENT MESOAMERICAN ART.POETS IN THE GALLERIES ALLOWS STUDENTS TO WORK WITH A PROFESSIONAL POET IN THE GALLERIES. STUDENTS DEVELOP THEIR INDIVIDUAL VOICES THROUGH THE PROCESS OF WRITING THEIR OWN POEMS BASED ON VISUAL ANALYSIS OF GALLERY ARTWORKS.PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT FOR EDUCATORS PROGRAMS ARE DESIGNED TO HELP CLASSROOM TEACHERS UTILIZE INQUIRY AS A LEARNING STRATEGY AND TO ENCOURAGE STUDENT ENGAGEMENT IN THE GALLERIES THROUGH FOCUSED INSTRUCTION. SOME FRIDAY NIGHTS THEMES IN 2013-2014 INCLUDED SIGHTS AND SOUNDS OF MEXICO, JAZZ AND POETRY, 1,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE CITY, THE AERIAL VIEW, NEW PERSPECTIVES, PAST DISCOVERIES AND FUTURE RELICS, NEW GENERATIONS STUDENT SHOWCASE, AND SUSTAINABLE AMERICANA.CONNECTING VISITORS WITH PRACTICING ARTISTS AND THE CREATIVE PROCESSTHE DE YOUNG'S ARTIST FELLOWS PROGRAM ENABLES THE MUSEUMS TO SUPPORT AND CULTIVATE LONG-TERM RELATIONSHIPS WITH A WIDE RANGE OF LOCAL MULTIDISCIPLINARY ARTISTS, ART GROUPS, AND ORGANIZATIONS. IN 2013-2014, THE DE YOUNG INVITED NINE ARTISTS TO PARTICIPATE IN YEARLONG FELLOWSHIPS IN CONJUNCTION WITH COMMUNITY ARTS ORGANIZATIONS. THE FINE ARTS MUSEUMS OF SAN FRANCISCO (FAMSF) HAS RENDERED OVER A CENTURY OF PUBLIC SERVICE IN THE ARTS, AND IT IS OUR MISSION TO EXTEND AND ENHANCE THAT SERVICE WELL INTO THIS CENTURY. RESEARCH, CONSERVATION, AND PRESERVATION THROUGH SCHOLARLY PUBLISHING ARE PART OF FAMSFS CORE MISSION. THIS DIVERSE RESPONSIBILITY OF CURATORS AND CONSERVATORS, REQUIRES RESEARCH, SCHOLARLY PUBLICATION, AND ANALYSIS TO CONTINUE THE MUSEUMS MISSION TO SERVE AS ONE OF THE PREMIERE PUBLIC INSTITUTIONS IN THE WESTERN UNITED STATES. THROUGH EXAMINATION, DOCUMENTATION, PRESERVATION, TREATMENT, AND RESEARCH OF ARTWORKS IN THE COLLECTION, CONSERVATORS ADVISE CURATORS ON THE CONDITION OF PROPOSED ACQUISITIONS AND COLLECTIONS THAT WILL BE EXHIBITED. OBJECTS, PAINTINGS, AND TEXTILES CONSERVATION EACH HAVE SEPARATE LABORATORIES AT THE DE YOUNG, WHICH REOPENED IN ITS NEW HERZOG & DE MEURON-DESIGNED BUILDING IN 2005.
