HIDA recognizes interest expense and penalties related to unrecognized tax benefits in general and administrative expenses on the consolidated statements of activities and change in net assets and accrued expenses on the consolidated statements of financial position. There is no provision in the consolidated financial statements for penalties and interest related to unrecognized tax benefits for the years ended December 31, 2014 and 2013. Tax years prior to 2011 are no longer subject to examination by the IRS or the tax jurisdiction of the Commonwealth of Virginia.
