MARQUETTE MARITIME MUSEUM: THE MUSEUM IN OPEN 7 DAYS A WEEK FROM MID-MAY TO MID-OCTOBER. DURING THE PERIOD WHEN THE MUSEUM IS CLOSED, THE BOARD,STAFF AND VOLUNTEERS WORK ON UPDATING AND CREATING NEW EXHIBITS FOR THE NEXT YEAR. THE MUSEUM IS SELF-GUIDED; HOWEVER, GUIDED TOURS CAN BE REQUESTED. THE CURRENT EXHIBITS INCLUDE: 4 FRESNEL LIGHTHOUSE LENSES; LOCAL SHIPWRECKS INCLUDING THE HENRY B.SMITH AND EDMUND FITZGERALD; EARLY LIFE SAVING AND COAST GUARD HISTORY; EARLY PASSENGER SHIPS ON THE GREAT LAKES; EARLY SHIPPING OF ORE AND THE PROCESS THAT IS DONE TODAY; AND A LARGE SELECTION OF LIGHTHOUSES IN THE AREA. PART TIME STAFF IS USED TO GIVE TOURS, TAKE ADMISSION AND RUN THE SHIP'S STORE. THERE ARE ABOUT 2,000 SCHOOL CHILDREN THAT COME ON FIELD TRIPS WITH CLASSES AND THEY ARE PROVIDED FREE ADMISSION TO THE MUSEUM AND LIGHTHOUSE. MARQUETTE HARBOR LIGHTHOUSE: THE MARITIME MUSEUM IS WORKING TO PRESERVE THIS HISTORIC STRUCTURE FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS. IT WAS BUILT IN 1866 AND IS ONE OF THE OLDEST BUILDINGS IN MARQUETTE, MICHIGAN. PRESERVATION INCLUDES KEEPING THE STRUCTURE SOUND AND SECURE WHILE KEEPING WITH THE HISTORIC TIME PERIOD. THE MUSEUM ALSO HAS A TOUR PROGRAM FOR THE LIGHT. THE ONLY WAY TO TOUR THE MARQUETTE LIGHT IS BY A GUIDED TOUR FROM THE MUSEUM. THE LIGHT IS CURRENTLY SITUATED ON AN ACTIVE FEDERAL COAST GUARD BASE. THE TOUR GUIDES ARE TRAINED IN EARLY LIFE SAVING, COAST GUARD AND LIGHTHOUSE HISTORY. THERE ARE ALSO 7 EXHIBITION ROOMS IN THE LIGHT FOR PEOPLE TO LEARN MORE ABOUT WHAT LIFE WAS LIKE LIVING IN THE LIGHTHOUSE. THE TOURS GO MULTIPLE TIMES A DAY AND LAST FOR ABOUT 50 MINUTES EACH. MCCLINTOCK PROJECT:THIS ADDITIONAL ANNEX WAS ADDED TO THE MARITIME MUSEUM BUILDING THAT HONORS WORLD WAR II SUBMARINE VETERANS. THERE IS A WORKING DIORAMA OF THE LARGEST NAVAL BATTLE IN HISTORY-BATTLE FOR LEYTE GULF, A WORKING PERISCOPE AND A TEST TORPEDO THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN USED DURING THAT TIME. THE MUSEUM ROTATES EXHIBITS AND UPDATES THEM ANNUALLY, INCLUDING THE CONNOR TOWER MEMORIAL OF THE USS DARTER. KIDIFICATION: THIS WAS A PROJECT STARTED 2 YEARS AGO TO MAKE THE MUSEUM MORE FAMILY FRIENDLY. THERE ARE 4 CHESTS THROUGHOUT THE MUSEUM WITH HANDS ON LEARNING ACTIVITIES, A PIRATE SCAVENGER HUNT, TREASURE HUNT AND CRAFT TABLE. PLANS ARE TO ADD A FISH TANK, READING NOOK AND SIGNAL FLAGS IN THE NEXT YEAR. MARITIME MONTH: AUGUST IS THE MONTH THAT THE RICH MARITIME HISTORY IS CELEBRATED WITH SPECIAL TOURS, OPEN HOUSES AND KIDS DAY. LIGHTHOUSE BRICKS: ENGRAVED BRICKS ARE BEING SOLD TO BE INSTALLED AT THE LIGHTHOUSE TO HELP RAISE FUNDS FOR THE PRESERVATION WORK THAT NEEDS TO BE DONE TO THE EXTERIOR OF THE LIGHTHOUSE.
